Showbiz: Mila makes her own music
Mila at the launch of her new album
Mila Jirin is taking her musical career to another level. She tells DENNIS CHUA of her foray into songwriting
WHILE Mila Jirin does not mind being branded a pop princess, she believes in breaking out of her comfort zone and writing her own music.
The 24-year-old singer, actress and businesswoman, who sells her own beauty product range, Luvmila, is also taking her music in a more pop-rock and dance pop direction, away from her previous bubble gum pop.
The star of musical series Kau Dan Aku and comedy Lu Pikirlah Sendiri The Movie, who also did voiceover work for the Bahasa Malaysia edition of High School Musical has written her first song, Bebas, for her second album.
The new self-titled album contains seven other songs and is a collaboration with composers Aidit Alfian, Ajai, Amir, Afendi and Richard Kyoto.
They composed Malu-Malu and Luahan Hati, Kata Hati and Aku Lebih Tahu (remix), Bebas and Kasih Yang Terdampar, La Ober and Siapa Tak Perlu Cinta, respectively.
The other lyricists are Ad Samad (Malu-Malu and Luahan Hati), Sheikh Qalam (Kata Hati), Nafisah (Kasih Yang Terdampar), the late Loloq (Aku Lebih Tahu), Afendi (La Ober) and Kyoto (Siapa Tak Perlu Cinta).
Akademi Fantasia 5 (AF5) winner Mila says: “It’s the first time I’m involved in choosing the materials for my album and, for that reason, I’ve decided to collaborate with some of the best new composers and lyricists around.” While Penang-born Mila has only written one song for this album, she plans to increase her self-penned content in future albums.
“I’m taking baby steps in this direction, but it has always been my aim to create my own music as I progress,” she says.
Her close pals from AF Aizat Amdan, Dafi Ismail Sabri, Ika Rahim, Nadia Hasnan, Akim Ahmad and Adila Mohd Dan have greatly encouraged her.
“There are many budding singers and songwriters today — Aizat, Ana Raffali, Yuna, Najwa and Faizal Tahir being the most prominent.
“It’s good to create your own music because it will boost your fan base and help your longevity in show business,” she says, adding that she would love to collaborate and write songs with Dafi, Shila Amir Amzah and Aizat.
Mila’s new album is jointly produced by MJ Panacea Records Sdn Bhd and Erama Records Sdn Bhd.
In addition to being available in CD and music video formats, it can also be downloaded with a prepaid digital card, a first of its kind in the country.
Erama chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Afendi Hamdan says: “The card can download the album’s songs from www.erama.tv into computers.
“The songs can be downloaded via telecommunication service providers as Maxis, Digi and U-Mobile.” Hugely popular for her girl-next-door charm, entertaining concerts and rapport with fans, Mila recently participated in the Open Mic UK 2010 singing contest held in Newcastle, the United Kingdom.
She says: “While I did not make it to the finals, it was a good experience, as it exposed me to the diverse musical styles and talents around the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries.” She says being in the competition also encouraged her to write her own music.
Mila’s first international singing contest, the Discovery International Music Festival in Varna, Bulgaria, three years ago, toughened her up and helped her overcome shyness on stage.
“Discovery, which I won, made me braver in the face of international audiences. It challenged me to be myself, and entertain music lovers my way,” she says, adding that she was more than prepared to sing at international events in future.
Acting, she says, takes a back seat to singing but she would love to star in television programmes, musicals or films with interesting storylines and important lessons.
“I enjoyed myself starring with Akim and Ika in Kau Dan Aku, doing voiceover work with Dafi in High School Musical, voicing a cartoon elephant in Jumbo Gajah Biru, and laughing out in Lu Pikirlah Sendiri,” she says.
Mila’s album was launched at Malaysia Tourism Centre, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur on Jan 27.

Malam semua...
skrg ni akak kat Raub Pahang. Pagi tadi daftar masuk anak akak( IQBAL) ke sekolah Men. Agama Kerajaan Negeri Pahang (SMA Al-ULUM ADDINIAH Dong, Raub Pahang. Alhamdulillah petang tadi semua dah selesai urusan pendaftaran masuk ke asrama dan sekolah tersebut..Insyaallah petang esok, bertolak balik ke P.Jaya.. tenet kat sini slow sangat2..huhu..nak post kat sini kena tunggu lama, baru leh dapat.
kalau xde aral melintang dapat lah tengok persembahan Mila kat Pentas Akhir Pilih Kasih tv1 malam esok. Harap Mila dapat wat persembahan terbaik mlm esok.. |
