Criticised for a lack of commitment after losing to Croatia, then underwhelming against Austria, Germany were widely expected to fall at the first hurdle when the knockout stage began. Instead, up against an in-form Portugal who were many people's tip for the crown, Germany turned in one of the performances of UEFA EURO 2008
