“Ha Ryun” in the history
Ha Ryun (하륜 河崙, 1347~1416).
- The following phrase is trending on the Korean internet right now : “Make a reform like Jung Mong-Joo, make a revolution like Jung Do-Jeon, live a life like Ha Ryun, and put on makeup like Gil Tae-Mi”
- Why “Live a life like Ha Ryun”? For about 70 years, he had served 9 kings under 2 dynasties. Although it was turbulent times, he succeeded in his life and died full of years and honors.
- A cornered stone meets the mason’s chisel. The two representative genius scholars, Jung Mong-Joo and Jung Do-Jeon, were killed by Yi Bang-Won respectively. Actually, Yi Bang-Won killed his wife’s brothers, his son’s in-law, and anybody who would become a potential threat to absolute royal authority. However, Ha Ryun lived through Yi Bang-Won’s scary purges due to his amicable personality as well as his wise behavior. He never showed off his power, and stuck to his position as the second-in-command from beginning to end. He was the master in the art of living.
- Anyway, Ha Ryun will be described as an enemy to our dragons for a while, but after Joseon was founded and our dragons will be divided into two groups (Jung Do-Jeon vs. Yi Bang-Won), Ha Ryun will play a prominent role as Yi Bang-Won’s right-hand man.
- Jung Do-Jeon, Jung Mong-Joo, Ha Ryun, (and maybe Hong In-Bang?) learned under the same teacher. Their teacher, Yi Saek, helped General Jo Min-Soo to enthrone Crown prince Chang in Ep. 22.
- Ha Ryun was 10 years younger than Jung Mong-Joo, and 5 years younger than Jung Do-Jeon. Oh, he was 20 years older than Yi Bang-Won.
- He was out of luck in his early career. He was forced to resign in disfavor with prime minister Shin Don. After Shin Don’s execution, he returned to the government and became Yi In-Im’s relative (the husband of Yi In-Im’s niece). However, Yi In-Im was ousted, and Ha Ryun was sent into exile because he opposed to Choi Young’s Liadong expedition. After returning from the exile, he joined hands with his teacher Yi Saek (and later with Jung Mong-Joo) to attack Jung Do-Jeon’s revolutionist party.
- Jung Do-Jeon disliked him and said “I can’t trust a tricker’s words.” which incurred Ha Ryun’s hatred toward Jung Do-Jeon because it was one of the most insulting remarks for a Confucian scholar to be called “a tricker” at that time. The two became bitter enemies.
- After Joseon was established, Jung Do-Jeon seized the power of the court and built the ideological and political foundation of the new nation. Ha Ryun was relegated to a trivial position.
- Jung Do-Jeon advised King Taejo (Yi Seong-Gye) to choose his 8th son, Yi Bang-Seok, as his successor. From then on, for about 6 years, Yi Bang-Won had been completely abandoned and ignored by his father and Jung Do-Jeon, although he was the best contributor to the foundation of Joseon.
- Ha Ryun approached Yi Bang-Won. Misery loves company.
- Jung Do-Jeon tried to separate them, so he assigned Ha Ryun to a local government office.
- In the farewell party, Ha Ryun intentionally spilt liquor on Bang-Won’s cloth, and had a secret meeting while pretending to remove the stain.
- Bang-Won followed his advice and made a surprise attack on Jung Do-Jeon about 20 days after the farewell party. That is so-called “the fist strife of Princes” (1398).
- In short, Ha Ryun is the man who helped Yi Bang-Won to kill Jung Do-Jeon and his half brothers.
- On top of that, he saved Bang-Won’s life several times.
- Is he a villain to activate a worm in Bang-Won’s heart? Well, it remains to be seen. We don’t know yet how SFD will describe him in the future.
