10 Things to Note From the Roma Game
Sami Faizullah July 26, 2012 0

So, Brendan Rodgers suffered his first defeat as a Liverpool manager against AS Roma in Boston. Many of the key first team players, including those who went to the Euros and new signing Fabio Borini, did not feature in this game. Instead, Rodgers put his faith in younger players despite the quality of the opposition. Its a pre-season game, and the results of such matches do not matter. Fans can be pleased with the general display and performance.

Lets have a look at some key points and lessons learnt from the game at Fenway Park.

Aquilani and Shelvey can be key first team players

There has been lots of talk this week and in the transfer window in general about the future of our two midfielders. Reports from BBC yesterday suggested that Shelvey could be loaned out as a part of the potential Joe Allen deal while speculation is always rife about the future of Alberto Aquilani. Liverpool have lacked creativity from midfield in the past. The midfielders last season were largely guilty of not getting into the box enough. These two factors are vital for Rodgers’ style of play. Aquilani and Shelvey fit the criteria perfectly on that front. Holding onto them can be far more vital than signing another midfielder.

While our Attack is improving, the Defense seem to be suffering

Brendan Rodgers follows a complete attacking philosophy. Keeping the ball moving forward is key in his style. However, sometimes it seems to be done at the expense of the defense. With the departure of Steve Clarke who vitally reassured our defense, coupled with the attacking style from front to back, the defenders have fallen short. As it was evident in the game in Boston, the defenders looked confident when moving forward, but defensively, they seemed nervous. They were caught out of position a couple of times, especially full backs who got forward. This ultimately led to the two goals we conceded.

Adam doesn’t fit into Rodgers’ style

Charlie Adam did get a consolation goal in a rare moment when he got forward and into the box. However, it seems like he is having trouble finding his feet into the style of play currently employed. He is unable to play those quick touches and short passes, while his movement has never been good. Too often, he takes the ball under control and sprays it out long while Rodgers insists on passing the ball along the ground. Long balls are a rare move in the Rodgers’ style, even in moments of desperation. With an overloaded midfield, Adam will have to alter his play or risk being the one shown the door.

Youngsters quickly gaining confidence

With many key players missing from the Toronto game, the youngsters were given the opportunity to run the field and play. However, it came as a surprise that Rodgers stuck with a youthful squad even against a quality opposition like AS Roma, who largely played their first team. The experience that these Reserve team players are getting is vital for their growth and the early signs look good. Despite playing against the Italian giants, many of the youngsters looked confident and assured. While the obvious examples of Sterling and Suso are known, its good to see players like Stephen Sama, Ryan McLaughlin, and Adam Morgan getting their chances in the first team. Steady growth and development of the young players is important for the long-term ambitions of the club. This is a step in the right direction.

Passing is improving, but more need to be completed in the final third.

Swansea were praised for their passing game last season. While their accuracy was superb, they lacked the key passes in the final third. It’s the same case with Liverpool. We manage to maintain possession and play successful passes, much of these though are side to side and backward without too many in attacking areas. Players need to be able to play more passes in and around the box to create goal scoring opportunities. It will be too harsh to be critical on this front but with two more games to go and much more training time available, it might not be long before Liverpool adapts the tiki-taka play.

Adam Morgan can go onto greater things.

It’s important for any youngster to play with complete confidence. It’s vital for a striker to possess the striker’s instincts. Early signs suggest Adam Morgan, with the right development, could go onto becoming a valuable striker to come through the Liverpool academy. His passion is clearly evident and he has already shown his ability for the Reserves. An interesting note from the Roma game was the confidence with which he played. He was not shy to go head to head with players. There were two such instances with Burdisso and Heinze. If things go well, he could follow the footsteps of the likes of Robbie Fowler himself, and of course, Michael Owen.

Spearing is a fringe player.

Speaking about players coming through from the academy, Jay Spearing is another one to make it into the first team. However, with already a few games under his belt, he doesn’t seem good enough to make the cut. Last season, he was able to play a few games due to the injuries that plagued the midfield. While there is no questioning his passion, he definitely lacks the skills. With him turning 24 later this year, he cannot be considered a young talent/rising star any more. There is already an abundance of midfielders at the club and selling a few is necessary. Don’t be surprised if ‘young’ Jay is next in line.

Sterling and Suso can turn out to be World Class players.

As already mentioned, every youngster, more than anything, needs confidence in his game and that involves never being shy of having the ball at your feet. With Suso and Sterling, that is not an issue whatsoever. The confidence and quality in their game brings a smile to any Liverpool fan’s face. With more regular opportunities and possibly a loan move, these two youngsters can be the first two to make it through the policy FSG are trying to instill. FSG sees the idea of developing youngsters more desirable than buying first team players. Every fan can be excited about these two young teenagers. The time may not be right for a regular spot in the first team, but a loan move is of utmost importance.

Pacheco finally deserves his opportunity.

For years now, Liverpool have been excited about the prospect of the young La Masia student Dani Pacheco. Kristian Nemeth was a name that excited Liverpool fans earlier, and now the likes of Sterling and Suso. The excitement surrounding Pacheco was immense, but he never got his opportunity. Last season, he was sold (or that is what many of us thought) to Atletico Madrid. He is back now and more mature than before. He lost his opportunity initially at Liverpool, but hes been given a second chance now. His future is not secure whatsoever, but with the quality in his play, mastering the role of the wide man of a front 3, Brendan Rodgers should definitely give Dani Pacheco a fair look.

Joe Cole proving his quality

We rejoiced when we captured the free signing of Joe Cole. It seemed a terrific deal. However, his spell at Liverpool was an ill-fated one. Last season, he revived himself in Ligue 1 with Lille. Now, hes back and looks much like the player that got us excited in the summer of 2010. His movement, his passes, and his general ability was shown in the Roma game. He was just unlucky to not get on the scoresheet. Rodgers knows Cole from his days at Chelsea, and Joe doesn’t seem to have a problem fitting into the style. His wages are a stumbling block, but it would be foolish to not consider him for the first team.

Beli tanpa ada keperluan macam itulah yang perlu dielakkan. Nanti sia - sia je bakat yang ada.

kalu defender mungkin susah la..
tp utk player mid maybe takde masalah sgt kalu ramai..
sb tiki taka 4:3:3 mmg kena ramai midfield..
