Spalletti plays down bids

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has denied that bids have been made for several of his star players. Real Madrid were thought to have made an offer for both Cristian Chivu and Philippe Mexes, but the Giallorossi boss revealed on Wednesday that he believes it is too late to be swooping for his players.
"No one has made an offer for Chivu and that is also true for Mexes, Amantino Mancini and Daniele De Rossi," he said.
"What would I do if we were to receive an offer now for one of these players? I would certainly consider it, but it honestly seems a bit late for this kind of operation.
"When you give up on such important players you need an immediate replacement of the same level and that is not something you can do in a hurry.
"After all, the summer transfer window closes in 10 days time."
That said, Real are still looking for a young defender to partner new signing Fabio Cannavaro this season. And former Juventus man Cannavaro recognises what the pair could bring to the Bernabeu.
"Chivu and Mexes are both very good defenders and have showed their value in Italy, although I prefer to leave these decisions to Coach Capello," Cannavaro said. |
