A screen grab from the two-minute teaser directed by a local filmmaker, who is mulling making an actual film based on the popular short story.
[size=100%]KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23, 2014:
Those who grew up in the 90s are probably familiar with an erotic story entitled “Cikgu Suraya”. It was a tale about a high-school student named Amir and his affection for his mathematics teacher, Cikgu Suraya. The story goes on to depict an affair between the boy and the teacher, who is a wife of a government officer and a mother of a one-year-old. Now, a film maker has decided to give the Youtube generation a visual depiction of the story. Well, almost. A short two-minute teaser of the widely known “adult story” was released on Youtube just two days ago and at the time of publication has garnered almost 32,000 views. The director Tengku Umar Tengku Zairuddeen, 26, who works with Under The Bridge Productions, in an interview with The Rakyat Post, revealed that the “fake teaser” was meant as a joke for his friends.
He had originally distributed the short story to his friends, one of whom was really good with graphics and designed a movie poster with his name on it and that the movie would be released in 2014. “So I played along and made this fake teaser. But after seeing the overwhelming response, I am seriously thinking of making a movie out of it.” Tengku Umar said he was aware of the need to censor the controversial bits, but as the story contained mostly of the duo’s sexual encounters, he planned to portray more of the characters and its untold social issues. “In this country, sex is a taboo. However, I believe that I can tell the story and highlight its social problem, which are the immoral activities taking place everywhere, but have never been truly dealt with.” When asked how he planned to portray the sex scenes, Tengku Umar said he would use montages to imply the act. “I will put videos of a man climbing a mountain, or rough seas, anything that can truly portray the feelings Amir was experiencing without making it sexually explicit.” He added there were still much to do before he could actually make the movie, but planned to have it out by 2016. Tengku Umar said he would first seek the approval from relevant authorities and probably consult them on the approach to ensure the movie was suitable for the public without taking away its essence. Then, he added, there was the issue on the original author of the piece who until now had remained anonymous. Tengku Umar said there could be a situation where someone might come out and claim to be the rightful owner of the piece and demand for a share of the profits garnered.
