Miike's "13 Assassins" wins audience award at Sitges
Mon, October 18, 2010 (8:45pm EDT)
The awards for the 43rd Sitges Film Festival have been announced, and Japanese films picked up three of the prizes.
Takashi Miike's "13 Assassins" remake earned the Grand Audience Award, while also winning for best art direction (Yuji Hayashida). Sion Sono's "Cold Fish" won the Casa Asia award.
The last Japanese film to win the audience award at Sitges was Hayao Miyazaki's animated film "Howl's Moving Castle" in 2004.
Japanese producers did well at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union awards held in Tokyo yesterday. The 47th ABU General Assembly was hosted by NHK, Japan's public broadcasting network, which took prizes in four of the 13 categories. Of the 199 nominated shows, 141 were TV programmes and 58 were radio programmes. NHK won for Children's TV (The Three Musketeers: Ep 20: The Chaotic Ball, photo above); Youth TV (Discover Science: Let’s See the Speed of Sound); Sports TV (Miracle Body: Downhill Skiing – Race Against Fear); and Radio Drama (Revival). The ABU Technical Review Prize went to Shogen Kazuyoshi of NHK's Science and Technology Research Laboratories.
Japan-based radio and television presenter Peter Barakan spoke to the assembly on Monday on the topic of introducing non-mainstream music programming. Long known for playing music from obscure artists, particularly African music, Barakan said "You have to take the public demand into consideration but you have to lead them as well." If you were too far ahead, you could lose them, so the ideal position was for the presenter to stay half a step ahead.

"Kokou no Mesu" wins audience award at Chinese film fest
Thu, October 21, 2010 (11:42am EDT)
Director Izuru Narushima's film "Kokou no Mesu," starring Shinichi Tsutsumi (46), has won the audience-voted award for Best Foreign Film at the 19th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival, held in China. The last Japanese film to win the award was "Okuribito" in 2008.
"Kokou no Mesu," also known by the English title "A Lone Scalpel," is based on a novel written by a real doctor. Tsutsumi stars as a man motivated to become a doctor after his mother dies due to a faulty diagnosis. While battling the flaws of the medical system, he is faced with the challenge of performing Japan's first liver transplant from a brain-dead donor.
The movie opened in Japanese theater this past June and is scheduled for DVD release on December 3.

On this week's sales charts, Kanjani8's album "8UPPERS" ranked #1 with just over 231,000 copies sold. This is their third consecutive number-one album. Two remastered Beatles albums entered the charts at #3 and #4, while Golden Circle of Friends, ORANGE RANGE, and Takeshi Tsuruno occupied the #8 to #10 slots.
On the singles chart, another Johnny's Jimusho group, NYC, led the way with their "Yoku Asobi Yoku Manabe." The song sold close to 93,000 copies, giving them their second consecutive number-one.
The bigger story, however, was Korean group SNSD reaching #2 with the Japanese version of their song "Gee" (66,000 copies). They are just the second foreign female group to enter the Top 3 of the singles chart. The only other group to do it was The Nolans, thirty years ago in 1980.
The other new singles in the top ten were from The ROOTLESS (#3), Maaya Sakamoto (#5), ClariS (#7), Sphere (#8), and The Cro-Magnons (#9).
It was announced earlier this week that AKB48's new single "Beginner" was shipping more than 1 million copies for its release on Wednesday, and that decision now seems well justified. In its first day in stores, "Beginner" sold more than 568,000 copies. According to The Natsu Style, this is the highest first-day sales figure for a single since Oricon began announcing daily sales data.
In comparison, Arashi's single "Monster" previously set this year's record for opening-week sales at 543,000. "Beginner" has already surpassed that in one day, and is positioned to possibly overtake Arashi's "Troublemaker" as the best-selling single of the year (currently 699,000 copies).
Just two months ago, AKB48 set their own personal record for first-week single sales at 527,000 copies with "Heavy Rotation."
On October 28th around 5pm Japan time, it was posted on their official sites that Kimura Kaela gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Kimura, 26, commented "The child is so small but has brought such a strong presence between the both of us. We will shower this child with love, love and love"
Eita too, was deeply moved by the arrival of the child and commented "The child looks like both me and Kaela. I'm so overwhelmed with his strong presence"
In early June, Nikkan Sports reported that Eita (27) and Kimura Kaela will be getting married and Kimura was in her fifth month of pregnancy. The news was later confirmed on their websites. Kimura once again assured fans that she will not leave the entertainment industry and is looking forward to meet fans in her next live.
