Kirilenko strolls, Sania withdraws
KOLKATA: Russian fourth seed Maria Kirilenko breezed through to the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over India's Neha Uberoi at the WTA Sunfeast Open here yesterday.
The on-field action was however overshadowed by the last-minute pullout by local favourite Sania Mirza with a right wrist injury.
Third seeded Mirza, one of the biggest attractions at this US$175,000 Tier III event, will also miss out on the Korean Open next week in Seoul and is a doubtful starter in Tokyo the week after.
ζ was looking forward to this meet and am very upset that this injury is keeping me away from the courts, |

Top seed Golovin ousts Osterloh to enter second round
PORTOROZ (Slovenia): Top-seeded Tatiana Golovin of France needed three sets to eliminate American Lilia Osterloh 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 on Monday in the first round of the Slovenia Open.
It was the second meeting between the two. In their only other encounter at the French Open in 2005, Golovin routed the 29-year-old from San Francisco 6-0, 6-2.
Golovin reached a career high ranking of No. 16 in May, a month after claiming her only tour title in Amelia Island, Florida.
In another first-round match, fourth-seeded Katarina Srebotnik routed Slovenian compatriot Masha Zec Peskiric, 6-0, 6-0 in 40 minutes.

Blow to Kuznetsova
BEIJING: An abdominal muscle injury yesterday forced titleholder Svetlana Kuznetsova to withdraw before the start of her opening match at the China Open.
The strain of playing a US Open final two weekends ago followed by her feat in leading Russia to the Fed Cup trophy just days ago in Moscow proved to be too much for the top seed.
Her place in the 32-woman draw will be taken by Argentine Maria Emilia Salerni, who faced American Abigail Spears in the second round after a bye.

Hingis owns five Tokyo titles but failed to make an impression as she played for the first time in China.
"I wanted to see the Olympic city," said the 26-year-old who last reached a tournament quarter-final in March.
Kuznetsova said that her body just gave out under the intense pressure of the past few weeks.
