AKB48 sets records with "Beginner"
Oricon has just announced the official weekly sales numbers for AKB48's latest single "Beginner." In its first week, the single sold approximately 827,000 copies, becoming their fifth consecutive number-one.
That total sets a new record for first-week single sales by a female group, surpassing SPEED's "ALL MY TRUE LOVE," which sold 601,000 copies in 1998. Among all female artists (group and solo), "Beginner" ranks #3 in first-week single sales, behind Hikaru Utada's "Addicted To You" (1.068 million) in 1999 and Namie Amuro's "CAN YOU CELEBRATE?" (828,000) in 1997. However, that makes them #1 so far in the 21st century, outselling Utada's "Can You Keep A Secret?" (784,000) in 2001.
"Beginner" is also AKB48's third consecutive single to sell more than half a million copies in the first week. This also sets a record for female artists, as Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki held the previous record with streaks of two consecutive singles.

Charts: AKB48, K-On!!
Wed, November 3, 2010 (12:37am EDT)
As reported earlier this week, AKB48 set some records with their latest single "Beginner," selling almost 827,000 copies in its first week to take the #1 spot on the charts. This blew away the rest of the competition, as #2 was Porno Graffitti's new single with close to 39,000 copies. DREAMS COME TRUE (#4), Lia (#6), GRANRODEO (#7), and Shunsuke Kiyokiba (#10) also made the top ten with new releases.
On the album charts, the "K-On!!" anime character album "Houkago Tea Time II" stood out on top with over 127,000 copies sold. Last year, the fictional band's mini-album became the first anime character album to top the charts, and this time their first full album has nearly doubled it in first-week sales.
Most of the other top ten albums this week were new: Spitz (#2), Mika Nakashima (#3), Def Tech (#4), Ne-Yo (#5), Chatmonchy (#6), Kazuyoshi Saito (#7), and Masayoshi Yamazaki (#10).
Korean group BIG BANG sold 15,000 copies to rank #1 on the music DVD charts, and #2 on the overall DVD charts.
Meanwhile, Nana Mizuki also sold 15,000 copies to achieve #1 on the music Blu-ray charts. She is now the first artist to have three consecutive number-ones on that chart, and her sales give her the current record for a music Blu-ray Disc by a female artist, surpassing Namie Amuro's record of 14,000 set last year.

Ikimono Gakari sets 2010 record with best album
Ikimono Gakari's best album "Ikimono Bakari ~Members BEST Selection~" was released last week, and it has already sold 457,000 copies, more than doubling the first-week sales of their last album. That amount sets this year's current first-week sales record for an artist with female vocals, surpassing AKB48's "Kamikyokutachi" (295,000). Even including male artists, they are in second place behind Arashi's "Boku no Miteiru Fuukei."
Ikimono Gakari formed in 1999 but did not make their major label debut until 2006. They achieved their first number-one album with their 2008 release "My song Your song." With this, they now have three consecutive number-ones (two original albums and one best album). The last mixed male/female group to achieve that was HY in 2006.

Charts: Ikimono Gakari, NEWS
Ikimono Gakari topped the album charts this week with the best album "Ikimono Bakari ~Members BEST Selection~," selling 457,000 copies. As reported earlier, that sets this year's current record for first-week sales by a female-vocal artist.
Bon Jovi's "Greatest Hits" was #2 on the charts at 54,000 copies sold. Another overseas artist, Jamiroquai, also entered the charts at #7. The only other new releases in the top ten were from CHAGE and ASKA's ASKA (#8) and Kusuo (#10).
On the single charts, NEWS led the way with "Fighting Man," selling over 150,000 copies. They now have 13 consecutive #1 singles starting with their debut, putting them slightly ahead of KAT-TUN for the time being. However, they are still far behind the current record-holder KinKi Kids, who hold a world record at 29 consecutive number-ones starting with their debut.
Kana Nishino charted at #3 with her new song, followed by BREAKERZ at #4. Mami Kawada made her return to the top ten with a new single at #6. The rest of the top ten were also new releases, coming from The Gospellers, Sekai no Owari, Dragon Ash, and Oratorio The World God Only Knows.
Meanwhile, AKB48 was all over the DVD charts, achieving their first #1 in the variety/owarai rankings with their television show "AKB48 Nemousu TV." They actually took both the #1 and #2 spots with two simultaneously released DVDs for the show. The group also dominated the idol/image rankings: DVDs for Aki Takajo, Erena Ono, Tomomi Itano, and Watarirouka Hashiritai ranked #1, #3, #4, and #5 respectively.

"Beginner" certified as first million single since 2007
Just before the release of AKB48's latest single "Beginner" two weeks ago, it was announced that more than 1 million copies were being shipped. On November 10, the Recording Industry Association of Japan officially certified that it has shipped 1 million copies, becoming the group's first single to reach that milestone.
The last single to achieve a certified million was Masafumi Akikawa's "Sen no Kaze ni Natte" in August 2007.
"Beginner" already sold approximately 827,000 copies in its first week, setting a new record as a female group. In its second week, the single sold roughly an additional 64,000 copies to put its total sales at around 891,000 copies, as it edges closer to a potential 1 million in actual sales.
