Six Flying Dragons - Ep. 25~26
The historical background to help understand Ep. 25~26

* The bloody banquet at Dohwajeon mansion

  • It is a fiction. A really great bloody masterpiece. (period)
  • Yi Seong-Gye killed 3 assassins with one shot (3 arrows at one time). It is no exaggeration. According to the “official” history, he killed 5 birds with one shot.
  • OK. One more tidbit. a few years later, the luxurious mansion of Yi In-Im (“Yi In-Gyeom” in SFD) was completely destroyed and a huge pond was created there. it was a common punishment for corrupt officials at that time.

* Jo Min-Soo 조민수 曺敏修 (?~1390)

  • During the Liaodong expedition (May, 1388), General Jo Min-Soo was in charge of the Left army. He joined hands with General Yi Seong-Gye of the Right army and decided to retreat back to the capital. It was a military coup. His Left army was defeated in the seige of Gaegyung by General Choi Young  (June, 1388), but Yi Seong-Gye’s Right army took the palace and led the coup to the win. King U was deposed and General Choi Young was exiled. The two generals became the new supreme powers.
  • Before coming back to the capital, the two generals promised to enthrone one of Goryeo’s royalty. Yi Seong-Gye recommended Prince Jeongchang (정창군, 定昌君, 1345~1394), the descendent of Goryeo’s 20th ruler. (The current monarch, King U, was the 32nd ruler, which means Prince Jeongchang was a collateral relative of the royal family, with a lack of legitimacy.)
  • However, after the coup was finished, Jo Min-Soo betrayed Yi Seong-Gye. He joined hands with Yi Saek (이색 李穡 1328~1396) and brought the deposed king’s little son to the throne. (*King Chang, 昌王, 1380~1389, reign 1388~1389)
  • When Yi Seong-Gye demanded an explanation, General Jo made an excuse that Yi Saek, the greatest Confucian scholar of that time, insisted on the 8-year-old prince so strongly that it was out of his hands. However, the truth is that the prince was born from a distant relative of Yi In-Im (“Yi In-Gyeom” in SFD). Jo Min-Soo wanted to return the favor of Yi In-Im, because he got his first government post thanks to Yi In-Im in the past.
  • What’s more, he proposed to reinstate Yi In-Im to prime minister. However, to his surprise, Yi In-Im was already dead while in exile (as described in SFD).
  • Half a year ago, when Im Gyeon-Mi (“Gil Tae-Mi” in SFD) and Yeom Heung-Bang (“Hong In-Bang” in SFD) were executed during Jo Ban’s rebellion (January, 1388), Jo Min-Soo gave the lands he robbed back to the former owners, being afraid of getting implicated. However, when he gained power after the Wihwa island retreat (June, 1388), he got greedy for money and power and stole the lands again. That was signing his own death warrant.
  • In July 1388, about one months after the Wihwa retreat, the land reforms became a big issue. Of course Jo Min-Soo objected to it. Amid the growing controversy, he was impeached by Jo Joon’s petition; “The man who has committed crimes along with Yi In-Im is now objecting to our land reforms.” This time, even Yi Saek couldn’t save him from charges. He was sent into exile.
  • King Chang was not happy about his exile, saying “Even if he committed crimes, it wasn’t right to exile him. It is against my will, but I have no choice.”
  • Jo Min-Soo was released from the exile on a special amnesty given on King Chang’s birthday, but he was exiled again when the controversy on the deposed king’s lineage broke out. He died while in exile. (December 1390)
  • Once again, the bloody banquet in Dohwajeon mansion (Ep. 25) is a fiction. Repeat. It’s a fiction. (hahaha)

* The social status of palace maid (궁녀, 宮女)

  • Yeon-Hyang (연향), the mother of Boon-Yi and Bang-Ji, is a fictional character. She used to be a palace maid waiting upon the former queen (Princess Noguk of the Mongol empire).
  • The social status of palace maid during the Goryeo dynasty (918~1392) can not be cleary defined due to lack of documents. It is not known how they came to serve the court and what procedures applied to them. In a few documents related to Goryeo, the social status of palace maid seems to be generally “commoner” or “lower class”, such as the daughters of slaves, concubines, or the despised.
  • After Joseon was founded, Jung Do-Jeon and Jo Joon proposed a reform of the procedures for selecting palace maids. It was intended to select daughters of “public slaves” (slaves working in government offices) once a decade. Therefore, early Joseon’s palace maids were supposed to be “slaves” on principle.
  • However, many commoners in poverty sent their daughters to reduce the number of mouths to feed, which became a social problem. In the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, however, many palace maids got to be selected from commoners or middle class.
  • To sum up, if Boon-Yi’s mother was a Goryeo palace maid working for the queen, she is likely to be a slave or a commoner. However, we are not sure about her social status because she belongs to the secret organization called “Nameless”.

* Nameless, the secret organization.

It is entirely my imagination. I guess the secret organization is connected with Buddhist temples. because…

  • Monk Jeok-Ryong of Biguksa temple is one of its member.
  • Jeok-Ryong called Gil Seon-Mi “Seonsa (선사 禪師)” which refers to one of the monk’ ranks inSeon Buddhism during Goryeo period.
  • In ep. 24, both men were talking about their new leader who unified their divided organization in 1378. Goryeo’s buddhism had sectarian conflicts between Gyo (교종 敎宗 doctrinal Buddhism) and Seon (선종, 禪宗 Zen Buddhism). Gyo was the previously existing academically oriented Buddhist schools, and Seon (“Zen” in Japanese) was the meditation-based Buddhist schools.
  • Yeon-Hyang (연향 蓮香), the name of Boon-Yi’s mother, means “the fragrance of lotus flower”. Lotus flower symbolizes Buddha’s teachings, so her name has a strong Buddhist vibe. Of course, Buddhism was the state religion of Goryeo, so it was common for a girl to have a Buddhist name. I know, I know, but…
  • According to historical documents, Goryeo‘s Buddhism was extremely corrupt at that time. Murder, violence, plunder, adultery, rape, usury, unlawful brewing, luxurious silk costume, colorful hat, and leather shoes, The huge estates and many slaves possessed by Buddhist temples. Moreover, Buddhist temples had been protected by royal family and privileged nobles. (Biguksa monks are toned-down version of the reality.)
  • Jung Do-Jeon’s revolution was also an ideological shift from Buddhism to Confucianism. I guess the writing team can’t ignore this aspect. They vaguely handled it in Tree with Deep Roots (2011, SBS), too.

  • Yay, Sambong’s secret crush on Poeun was over, tragically. (crying)
  • For more information about Jung Mong-Joo, read wikipedia.
  • Six Flying Dragons had a series of enemies : Dodang trio (Yi In-Gyeom, Gil Tae-Mi, Hong In-Bang) → Choi Young → Jo Min-Soo → and finally, Jung Mong-Joo.
  • Yes, Poeun Jung Mong-Joo will be the last, and the most formidable enemy to our dragons. He looks like an incapable Confucian scholar right now, but his biggest strength lies on that he is really on the ball, especially about Jung Do-Jeon and Sadaebu scholars.
  • In addition, unlike the previous enemies, he is a respected scholar without any moral flaw. He has a righteous cause : “Protect Goryeo from usurpers!”. He has been regarded as a model of loyalty up to now.
  • Yi Seong-Gye’s revolutionist party will be in big trouble because of Jung Mong-Joo’s scary political attacks. To kill or to be killed, that is the question.
  • Bang-Won wil play a leading role in this chapter. And there will come a moment when a worm in Bang-Won’s heart finally swallows him up. It is like waiting for the moment when Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader.
