MOSCOW: Elena Dementieva rallied to beat fourth-seeded Serena Williams 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the final of the Kremlin Cup yesterday, winning her hometown tournament on the third attempt.

An erratic Williams, who fired seven aces, struggled at the beginning and made 59 unforced errors.

Serving in the opening game, Williams fell behind 40-love but rallied and served two aces on deuce to hold. Down 40-15 on her next serve, she returned long to fall behind 2-1.

But the American then won three consecutive games before the Russian broke back to level 4-4. Williams broke Dementieva at love in the 12th to go up in the match.

Davydenko pulls out

MADRID: Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko withdrew from the Madrid Masters yesterday, one day after booking his qualifying spot for next month's Masters Cup.

ATP officials said that the Russian pulled out with a right elbow injury he sustained during a title run last week in Moscow.

Davydenko will be replaced in the draw by Spain's Oscar Hernandez, who will face Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the second round.

Big-serving Karlovic continued his good run of form to beat former winner Marat Safin 6-3, 6-4 in the first round yesterday.

Karlovic, who won his third title of the season in Stockholm on Sunday, wrapped up the victory with his 17th ace of the match, overpowering the 2004 winner in 58 minutes.

The disheartened Russian said:

揗y aim for this season is just to finish the year, that's it. I don't know where I will play next, as I need to ask for a wildcard.

揑 just want to finish and start slowly preparing for 2008.

Andy Murray cruises through to Madrid Masters second round

MADRID: British number one Andy Murray continued his return to form with a classy 6-4, 6-1 win over Radek Stepanek in the first round of the Madrid Masters on Monday.

The 20-year-old Scot, who missed over three months of the season with a wrist injury, put the Czech to the sword with the help of an impressive array of passing shots to earn himself a second-round match against 15th-seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela.

Murray, who signalled his return to form by reaching the final in Metz earlier this month, made a sharp start, despite spurning three break points in the second game.

He looked steady on his own serve and after putting Stepanek under heavy pressure he broke in the 10th to take the first set 6-4.

He continued to stretch the Czech around the court in the second and raced his way into a 5-0 lead before closing out the match on his own serve.

揟hat抯 probably one of the best matches I抳e played, not just since I抳e been back from injury, but since I抳e been on Tour,

Mauresmo recovers to down Daniilidou in Zurich

ZURICH: Amelie Mauresmo struggled before beating Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 yesterday to reach the second round of the Zurich Open.

Mauresmo capitalised on her opponent's ankle troubles in the third set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead and winning on her next serve.

Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli also advanced, beating Peng Shuai of China 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-1.

Mauresmo and Daniilidou traded breaks midway through the first set, but last year's Wimbledon and Australian Open champion held on to take the lead.

Daniilidou had her ankles taped before the start of the second set, and then broke Maursemo in the opening game. The Frenchwoman recovered her serve, but soon fell apart and trailed 4-1.

On Monday, Nicole Vaidisova earned a welcome 6-4, 6-2 victory over Slovenia抯 Katarina Srebotnik.

The Czech enjoyed a highly successful first half of the season, before being floored by a virus and has since played only the US Open and Moscow.

Red alert for Federer

MADRID: Argentine danger-man Guillermo Canas looms in the path of holder Roger Federer after securing a third round place 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 over Agustin Calleri yesterday at the Madrid Masters.

The Swiss top seed's life suddenly got a touch uncomfortable as he comes up against the South American spoiler who knocked him out of backto- back Masters events last spring during one of the worst wobbles of his illustrious career.

Canas, who has been back on the ATP for more than a year after serving a doping ban, stunned Federer in the Indian Wells second round and repeated the upset little more than a week later with a fourth-round victory in Miami.

The pair have met four times - all at the Masters level - with the South American winning three.

Business as usual: Roger Federer waves to the crowd after disposing of Robby Ginepri 7-6, 6-4 in the second round of the Madrid Masters on Tuesday.

Federer advanced in his first match on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over American Robby Ginepri, but will need all of his steely nerve against his recent nemesis ranked 14th.

Nine Spaniards featured on court yesterday, but one fell early as 2006 finalist Fernando Gonzalez of Chile beat Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (13-11), 7-5.

Gonzalez stands seventh in the race for one of four remaining places for Shanghai and lost to Federer in straight sets in last year's title match.

Four seeds lost on a tightly scheduled day at an event setting new attendance records at its sixth edition.

Feliciano Lopez won the first of two all-Spanish clashes at the expense of seventh seed David Ferrer 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

The early defeat doesn't help the cause of Tokyo winner Ferrer in his battle for a place in Shanghai from a current sixth position.

2003 champion Juan Carlos Ferrero came out ahead in a battle of Spain's old stagers, winning 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 as long-time rival and fellow former French Open winner Carlos Moya, seeded 14th, dealt with an ankle injury which required heavy taping during the contest.

Argentine David Nalbandian put out Czech ninth seed Tomas Berdych 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) while Paul-Henri Mathieu upset 10th-seeded French countryman Richard Gasquet 7-6 (10-8), 7-5.

On Tuesday, British number one Andy Murray blew away Argentine 15th seed Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 6-3 to reach the third round.

The 20-year-old Scot has steadily improved after missing three months of the season with a wrist injury and completely outclassed Chela after making a whirlwind start.

Argentine Juan Monaco upset 11thseed Tommy Haas of Germany 6-4, 7- 5 in the second round

Schnyder through as Serena retires

Ousted: Serena Williams walks off the court after retiring injured from her first round match against Patty Schnyder in the Zurich Open on Tuesday. Schnyder was leading 6-0, 3-0 at that time.

ZURICH: Local favourite Patty Schnyder eased into the second round of the Zurich Open on Tuesday after sixth seed Serena Williams retired injured at 6-0, 3-0 down.

The American, who lost Sunday抯 Kremlin Cup final to Elena Dementieva, looked extremely out of sorts, barely moving as she surrendered her first two service games.

Briefly leaving the court at 3-0 down, Williams returned but showed no sign of improvement, taking just three more points as Schnyder romped through the opening set 6-0 in 22 minutes.

The second set began with Williams heading for the wrong side of the court.

The American, who has made late withdrawals from previous editions of the Zurich tournament, was whistled off the court following the umpire抯 announcement of her retirement 揹ue to injury

Home advantage a big plus for the US, says McEnroe

NEW YORK: Patrick McEnroe, the captain of the US Davis Cup team, hopes home-court advantage will make the difference against Russia in the final.

The United States, striving for their first Davis Cup title in 12 years, meet defending champions Russia in the final in Portland, Oregon, from Nov 30-Dec 2.

揑 think they抳e gotten even more and more important to me and to the guys as the years have gone on and this team has been together,

A breeze for FedEx

Sorry: Serbian Novak Djokovic embraces a ballgirl after hitting her with a ball during his second round match against Fernando Verdasco of Spain on Wednesday. Djokovic won 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.

MADRID: Holder Roger Federer was at his dominant best as he crushed Argentine Guillermo Canas 6-0, 6-3 to take his place in the Madrid Masters quarter-finals yesterday.

The world number one made a whirlwind start on the super-fast greenset surface at the Madrid Arena by rattling through the first set, leaving Canas totally bemused.

The Argentine put up stiffer resistance in the second set but still could not cope with the technical brilliance of the 26-year-old Swiss, who wrapped up the match in under an hour and will play Stefan Koubek or Feliciano Lopez in the last eight.

揑 took my chances and always felt in control. It was a good feeling out there,
