Nadal: "I just want to congratulate David, he played at a great level. I抦 sad I抦 losing in quarterfinal. It抯 sad for me and for everybody that came here to support me. I have to thank them because even though the match was horrible they kept supporting me. So, I抦 sad and happy because, after a month and a half without playing after an injury, I did it great until today

Golovin and Henin to fight for Zurich title
ZURICH: Justine Henin and Tatiana Golovin will meet in the final of the Zurich Open after earning contrasting victories yesterday.
The top seeded Belgian claimed a scrappy 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Nicole Vaidosova of the Czech Republic while France抯 Golovin cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Italy抯 Francesca Schiavone in the semi-finals.
The final will be a repeat of their recent Stuttgart meeting, at which Henin claimed her eighth title of the season.
It was top seeded Henin抯 19th consecutive victory since her loss to Marion Bartoli in the Wimbledon semi-finals, and only the second time she has conceded a set in those matches.
It took the Belgian two hours and 18 minutes to reach her 10th final of the season, and she had to work hard to overcome her own erratic play as well as the strengths of her opponent.
揑 didn抰 play a good match and on days like that you just have to accept you抮e not at your best, |

Nalbandian serves up a stunner
MADRID: Holder Roger Federer will meet unseeded Argentine David Nalbandian in the Madrid Masters final after the pair recorded victories yesterday.
Nalbandian defeated world number three Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6 to reach his first final of the year while world number one Federer progressed to his 10th final of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over unseeded German Nicolas Kiefer.
| Red-hot form: David Nalbandian gets ready to serve to Novak Djokovic en route to winning their Madrid Masters semi-final match 6-4, 7-6 yesterday.
|
The 26-year-old Swiss, who will get a crack at his 15th Masters series crown today, cashed in on an early break in the third game to glide through the first set.
Although Kiefer, who returned in June after more than a year out through injury, put up stiff resistance in the second, his opponent broke in the ninth game as he extended his winning run to 18 matches.
Federer has beaten Nalbandian in eight of their last nine meetings, including a 6-4, 6-0 win in the semi-final here last year.
Nalbandian, a former world No 3, has slumped to 25th in the rankings this season. 揟his is a very important win for me as I haven抰 had a good year, |

Rafael tries to put positive spin on defeat
MADRID: Rafael Nadal (pic) tried to look on the bright side despite suffering his heaviest defeat in three years when he was overwhelmed 6-1, 6-2 by David Nalbandian in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters on Friday.
The world number two, who seemed to suffer the after-effects of Thursday night's gruelling win over Andy Murray, surrendered his serve five times, lost nine games in a row and made a host of unforced errors as he exited the tournament he won in 2005.
揂nalysing it in the changing room I had the game under control and I don't know how it escaped me, |

Nalbandian stuns world No. 1 Federer to win title
| David Nalbandian
|
MADRID: Unseeded Argentine David Nalbandian claimed a shock victory over world number one Roger Federer when he came from a set down to clinch his first Masters Series title with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win in Madrid yesterday.
Nalbandian, who beat world numbers two and three, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, on his way to the final, became only the second player since Boris Becker in 1994 to beat the top three at the same event.
The Argentine, who has slipped from a top 10 slot to 25th in the rankings this season, looked out of it when Federer raced away through the first set.
But he became the first player to crack the Federer serve this week when he broke in the second set and kept his nerve to level the match before taking advantage of some uncharacteristic errors by the Swiss to claim a famous victory.
It was Federer's first defeat since he lost to Djokovic in the final of the Montreal Masters in August and only his seventh loss of the year.
Federer had beaten Nalbandian in eight of their last nine meetings including a 6-4, 6-0 win in the semi-final here last year, but the Argentine was the last man to beat the Swiss indoors when he won the Masters Cup in Shanghai in November, 2005.
The world number one appeared to be on course for another win after making his customary polished start on the ultra-fast court at the Madrid Arena.
He broke the Nalbandian serve in the fourth game after putting the Argentine under pressure with a superb backhand pass and again in the sixth with a fierce forehand drive as he wrapped up the first set in half an hour.
But just as the Swiss looked as though he might run away with it, Nalbandian fought his way back into the match by breaking Federer's serve in the second game of the second set.
The match was interrupted briefly when the watering system for the courtside flowers sprang a leak, but Nalbandian maintained his concentration and withstood some heavy pressure on his serve to take the set 6-3.
Federer looked uneasy at the start of the decider and gifted Nalbandian another break in the third game after two uncharacteristically loose shots that drifted beyond the baseline.
The world number 25 broke again in the ninth to claim the sixth ATP title of his career. |
