Fergie: We were lifeless
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that a lifeless first half against Fulham at Craven Cottage cost Man United the game.
The Red Devils lost to the Cottagers 2-0 and were forced to play with nine men after Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney were sent off during the match.
Scholes' red card gave Fulham a penalty in the first half, which Danny Murphy calmly converted to give the Cottagers the lead going into halftime. Only Edwin van der Sar's goalkeeping heroics prevented United's deficit from growing.
The Red Devils came out from the dressing room a different team, as they ignored their numerical disadvantage and took the game by the scruff of the neck. But in going forward, they left pockets behind for Fulham to exploit, allowing Zoltan Gera to turn in a late clincher.
"I was disappointed with the first half, I must admit," Sir Alex told MUTV. "We didn't get started at all and that's cost us the game."
"They were lively and they got stuck in, and we expected that. They lost 4-0 to us a few weeks ago so we expected a response from them. We didn't meet that challenge. I think we can thank Edwin van der Sar for keeping us in it," added Fergie. "In fairness to the team, in the second half they responded to the half-time talking and I think we were unlucky not to get something out of it. Their goalkeeper's made some terrific saves but we've missed a few chances ourselves."
"It's inevitable that one of their counter attacks will put you in trouble, and that cost us the game. We did really well and we were unlucky. If they'd have got the goal back then they may have even won it. In fairness they kept going and good credit to them for that."
Consecutive league losses have seen Man United's lead cut down to four points, with Liverpool having an opportunity to cut that to a single point should they beat Aston Villa.
United's lead has provided a buffer at the right time amidst this downturn in form, and Sir Alex is keen to for his team to return to winning ways when they host Villa after the upcoming international break.
"As I've said, when you lose games in March and April it can cost you," said the Boss. "Fortunately we have a slender lead at the moment but it's not a lot. Obviously I'm hoping we go away for the internationals and come back at our best."
"We've got a home game against Aston Villa in our next game and that's absolutely crucial."

Cristiano Ronaldo needs to break down his current system and reset himself.
His head is nowhere near the pitch. His attacking is indirect. His tantrums are ubiquitous. His emotions run complet ...

he's my favourite player since he arrived in manchester, but this is not ronaldo we are used to watch...
freekicks ?!?! 2 goals in more than 40 matches ?!?! and those 2 goals came in the same match...
dribblings ?!?! last year, percent of ronaldo's successful dribblings was 80%, now its 20%...
so tell me whats the difference between last and current season ?
is it lack of wish ? or its maybe lack of confidence ?
we may "blame" berba for ronaldo's goal scoring performance this season, but we cant blame Berba for Ronaldo's poor dribblings...
another thing: ronaldo spent half of the match lying on the grass...yes, he was fouled couple of times, but he must stand up and act like a MAN...
i dont know what is cristiano trying to achieve with lying on the grass ? yellow card for opponent: NO,
compassion from ref: NO...
only thing that he can achieve is getting booed from opposite fans...maybe he's in pain, but every player is from game to game, but only cristiano is lying for 1 minute...he really must stop diving...no wonder refs often book him for diving although he was fouled...his reputation has to do with it...
we saw the trace of boot (or kick) at his left thigh and he was showing that to the referee for one minute...
he got booked for unneeded reckles tackle and he could be sent off for arguing with the ref few times...
i cant believe hes still so immature...rooney is younger than him, but hes showing much greater level of maturity...
i hope i will se good old ronaldo soon...hes a key figure if we think to win 6 trophies this season...
cmon ron, show us that you are still best player in the world !!!
