Battle of the latest
Motorola RAZR V3x
In late 2004, Motorola's ultra-slim RAZR clamshell design pulled the company out of its state of uncool. But dare I ask - is the RAZR a one-trick pony?
The variants so far have been minor - different colours, celebrity designer endorsements and slight feature upgrades.
To the franchise's rescue comes the new RAZR V3x, the most feature-packed model to date with 3G video-calling, a tack-sharp 2 megapixel camera and expandable Transflash memory.
But the added features mean a bigger phone. This new RAZR is 40 per cent thicker than the original and the metal keypad has been replaced by a less sexy matte version.
Nevertheless, this is one of the best 3G clamshells out there.
All it needs now is a button that flips the cover up.

Nokia 6280
The beauty of the 6280 is in the simplicity of its user interface which has been kept dummy-proof.
The phone boasts an LCD screen that rivals the RAZR V3x in colour and resolution. It also has fast navigation, easy-to-press buttons and a generally solid feel.
And there is a slot for a miniSD memory card that can be removed.
Music is a strong focus (you can transfer songs from your computer without extra software), but you need an adaptor for standard headphones.
What riles me is the 500 address book limit. Also, the phone is a little bulky given that most sliders on the market now are very petite creatures.

Samsung i300
This Samsung is the first model here to offer gigabytes of onboard storage.
Having 4GB means the i300 (non 3G) is supposed to make your standalone MP3 player obsolete.
But the 3GB European version we tested is no iPod-killer.
The phone runs on the Windows Mobile 2003 platform and is meant to be a do-it-all smartphone.
However, applications like MSN Messenger and Internet Explorer get interrupted frequently.
The phone manages hundreds of contacts well though, with quick and easy name searches.
Like most handphones, the i300 also lacks a dedicated headphone jack. However, it has no excuses since it is billed as a 'premium music phone'.
It can take over 30 minutes to fill the phone with songs, whereas modern MP3 players do it at twice the speed.
Headphone sound quality is slightly above average, but the external dual speakers are weak.
The only things going for the i300 are the bright LCD screen, the business-oriented features, the comfortable grip and the iPod-inspired scroll wheel.

Slim, but it packs a punch
THIS phone is supposed to be so slim that it will make you look fat. At least that's what its promotional tag says.
I can certainly vouch that the Samsung SGH E770 is one of the 'thinnest' phones that the Korean company has produced so far.
Even with its clamshell cover, it is less than 2cm thick.
At only 85g, you can hardly feel its weight in your pocket.
I am not sure that the phone will make me look fat though.
Rather, it is helping me to burn fat while I work out at the gym.
EXTERNAL SLOT
The reason? The E770 comes with an external slot for micro memory cards - a major convenience for me.
I used to carry both my MP3 player and phone with me during my regular gym sessions.
But with 1GB micro memory cards available in the market now (see other report), I have not touched my MP3 player for several weeks.
I no longer need the player because I have transfered all 400 of my favourite songs to the phone.
As the E770 comes with a USB cable, it's really easy to update or transfer new songs to the phone.
I just plug it into my laptop and drag the MP3 files to the phone icon. So my phone is also my MP3 player.
As the Play and Forward buttons are conveniently placed on the phone's cover, I can even select my favourite 'running song' - Vangelis' Chariots Of Fire - while I am burning rubber on the treadmill.
The phone comes with a special Vibetonz feature, which makes it vibrate gently even when it is not on silent mode.
So if you are somewhere noisy and don't hear the SMS tone, you can still feel the phone vibrate when a message comes in.
Executives who are often away from their desks may be pleased to know that the E770 allows them to view Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files in text, graphic and video formats.
If reading on a small screen is not your cup of tea, how about projecting the data on to a plasma screen?
Like the latest range of phones that are targetted at business users, the E770 also has a TV-output function for you to channel your data to a big screen.
The phone costs $598 with a two-year plan or $698 without a plan. |
