Which is exactly right. The "ee" sound at the end of that diphthong
should come just before the "z" sound at the end of the word "skies."
I listened to the two files you uploaded here, and they're both very
good. You're doing a nice job with the language. I second Steve's
comment re: the "th" sound in the word "the" or "these" -- it's a
little too much like a "d." Tongue needs to be further forward,
against the lower part of the (upper) front teeth, and allow a little
more air through as you voice it, and you'll have it. For a "d," the
tongue is on the ridge behind the front teeth -- a different place.

While some singers elongate the second vowel of a diphthong for
effect, I don't believe there is any "rule" that says you must do so.
For the style of music you're doing, I wouldn't elongate the "ee"
sound any more than you already are. You're giving it just about the
right amount of emphasis. You do need to be a little more energetic
with your ending consonants at times (can't remember who else told you
that -- whoever it was, I agree), but other than that, your consonants
sound reasonably good, too.
To further refine your pronunciation, you might want to listen for a
distinction between "ee" as the second vowel of the diphthong, and "i"
(short-i, as in "sin" or "pin") as the second vowel sound. Sometimes,
in the middle of a word, that second vowel sound will be closer to the
"i" sound rather than the "ee" sound. The word "alive" might be one
of those.
It would be easier to show you with IPA -- but basically, I would
pronounce "alive" like so: (schwa)-l-ah-i-v, with more time given to
the "ah." The initial "a" (the first letter of the word "alive") is
an unaccented neutral sound (schwa). The "i" in "-live" is, to my
ear, a diphthong composed of "ah" plus "i" (short-i, rather than "ee")
-- that's how *I* would pronounce it, but I'm originally from the
midwestern part of the US, and folks from other parts of the country
may do it slightly differently.
Anyway, you're doing very well -- I liked both of your recordings.
You have a very nice voice!

Okay, I'm impressed! You don't fit the mold of the present day pop artists. I
can understand your words and you don't hold out the R/ah. Amazing! It's not my
style of music however if you did a show in the USA I'd come.
Two things I will mention. Mostly it's my own preferences and what I ask of my
students which is 1) Pronounce ending consonents. I realize it's easier to drop
ending consonents like Ds, Ps & Ts but poor practice; and 2) Make sure your
voice is on top of the music, not behind it. When people pay to hear a singer
they want to hear the singer, not the accompaniment. Next time you record,
listen to the mix and if the music is louder than you, tell the engineer to back
off on the accompaniment.
You have a good voice,
Dr Dean
