Update: Koeman stays at Valencia CF
VALENCIA, Apr 17 (SW) - Copa del Rey winners Valencia CF will no be sacking manager Ronald Koeman, despite recent rumours fed by Spanish media.
In an official statement published on Valencia's official site this evening, the club makes the following declaration:
"Valencia CF would like to state that despite the different rumours that appeared in the last days, its first team manager is Ronald Koeman, who has a contract for this season and two more, and that in no occasion we considered hiring another coach, let alone already having one under contract or being in negotiations with any other."
The statement comes a day after Valencia's 3-1 victory over Getafe CF in the final of the Spanish Copa del Rey.
Earlier today, Koeman said that there is no time for celebration right now. "There is still work to do," the manager referred to Valencia's 15th place in the Primera Division.

ATHLETIC BILBAO 5-1 VALENCIA
Valencia remain just two points above the relegation zone after being crushed 5-1 at Athletic Bilbao.
Ronald Koeman's side, who won the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night, were three goals down at the San Mames stadium after a brace from Fernando Llorente and one strike from Javi Martinez, before David Villa pulled one back for Los Che. Andoni Iraola and Artiz Aduriz added one more each for the Basque side towards the end.
Despiteresiding comfortably in mid-table, it was Bilbao who looked the morecommitted of the two sides, and were the ones creating early chances, and they got their reward after 19 minutes when Javi Martinez shot fromthe edge of the box was deflected past goalkeeper Juan Luis Mora.
Evenafter going a goal down, Valencia failed to mount a significant fightback, and they were two down three minutes after the break when thehighly impressive Llorente stabbed a finish past Mora.
He gothis second 20 minutes later when he tried to lob Mora. The goalkeepergot his fingers to the shot but the loose ball fell back into the pathof Llorente for a simple tap-in.
David Villa gave Los Che aglimmer of hope with 15 minutes to go when his free kick deflected offa defender and past Armando Riveiro in the Bilbao goal.
Itproved to be too little, far too late as Iraola latched onto a neatreverse pass form Joseba Etxeberria to slot home with five minutes ofnormal time left, before substitute Aduriz glanced in a header ininjury time to complete the rout as a stunned Koeman looked on. |
