GARY NEVILLE KANTOI

Gus Poyet has defended countryman Luis Suarez

Quoted in several newspapers, the former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder said: "I played for seven years in Spain and was called everything because I was from South America. And I never went out crying like a baby, like Patrice Evra, saying that someone said something to me.

"I believe Suarez. It's simple. I am surprised in a really sad way that he has been charged. I think it is worse to charge someone because you trust one person when you have no proof."

"I am sad because it is going to become too easy. I can make a complaint about an opposition manager and if I take it as far as I can he will be charged. Why are we going to take one person's word over another's?"

Dalglish puji kelincahan Johnson

Bellamy and Mata top pass stats

Craig Bellamy and Juan Mata topped the accuracy charts for their respective sides on Sunday - keep reading for more on this and the rest of the stats from Liverpool's 2-1 triumph at Stamford Bridge courtesy of Opta.

Chelsea had 19 shots to Liverpool's nine - but both sides managed to place three on target.

Of Liverpool's three shots on target, two were executed by Glen Johnson.

John Terry had the most touches with 97. For Liverpool, Charlie Adam was involved most with 70 touches.

Liverpool had to settle for 42.5 per cent of possession.

Pepe Reina played 22 passes with an accuracy of 59.1 per cent; Petr Cech played 14 passes and his accuracy was 100 per cent. But delve deeper into these stats and you find that Reina was far more ambitious with the ball - with 59.1 per cent of his passes classed as 'long' compared with Cech's 14.3 per cent.

Chelsea's defenders were more accurate in the pass than Liverpool's, with Ashley Cole (91.2 per cent) and Terry (90.6 per cent) finding their teammates most consistently. Daniel Agger was the best passer among our back four with an accuracy of 85.3 per cent.

In midfield, it was a tale of two Brazilians in terms of accuracy. Ramires found a blue shirt with 91.4 per cent of his passes. Lucas Leiva was Liverpool's most precise midfielder on 88.6 per cent.

It was two forwards who topped the accuracy table among starters for their respective sides. Mata played more passes than any other forward on the pitch (45) and they reached their target on 95.6 per cent of occasions. Bellamy was the most accurate of Liverpool's starters with 88.9 per cent of passes completed.

Johnson drew the most fouls for Liverpool (three) and Dirk Kuyt prompted the most whistles (three).

Liverpool won 54.9 per cent of 'duels' - though it was Chelsea who prevailed in the aerial battle (66.7 per cent).

Dutch ace a target for Liverpool

PSV Eindhoven playmaker Kevin Strootman is being targeted for transfer by Liverpool, according to the People.

The 21-year-old has been in impressive form for the Dutch side this season following brief spells at Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht.

Liverpool are reportedly leading the race for the player, and assistant manager Steve Clarke and first-team coach Kevin Keen went to watch the player against Germany last week.

Liverpool should have the resources to match Strootman's

Liverpool lead the hunt for Samba

Liverpool are heading the race for Blackburn Rovers defender Chris Samba, according to The People.

The 27-year-old has switched agents in order to gain a move away from Ewood Park, where he struggled to manufacture a move away from.

Samba remains keen to leave the club, despite signing a five-year deal with the club last January, with Liverpool the club in contention for his services.

Arsenal showed plenty of interest in Samba during the last January transfer window, and during the summer but instead opted to sign German Per Mertesacker.

Their interest has since cooled in the centre-back, with the return of Thomas Vermaelen also contributing to Arsenal going off the Congo stopper.

It's believed Samba is becoming disenchanted with life at Rovers, which has alerted Liverpool to his services.

Arsenal and Liverpool would both require £10 million to sign Samba

Reds plan stunning Swans raid

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will make a shock January swoop for speedy Swansea winger Nathan Dyer, according to reports.

The Scot has been impressed by Dyer's part in Swansea's strong start to their Barclays Premier League season, so much so that he want to bring the winger to Anfield, according to The Metro.

Liverpool made a number of additions to their squad over the summer and Dyer could be the next young star heading to Anfield.

Dyer was impressive in his side's narrow loss to champions Manchester United on Saturday evening, and Dalglish has apparently seen enough to signal the go-ahead for a transfer window offer.

Dyer's form has attracted other admirers, however, as both Everton and Newcastle United are said to be keen on the former Southampton man.

There has been no price stated and Swansea will be loathe to release one of their most important first team players, but a sizable offer from Liverpool might be too hard to turn down for the Welsh side.

However, the diminutive winger may find a starting place hard to come by on Merseyside, with Stewart Downing and Dirk Kuyt currently holding on to their places on the wing and Maxi Rodriguez also vying for a place.

Johnson calls for improved home form

Glen Johnson says Liverpool must replicate their away form at Anfield if they are to finish in the top four this season.

England full-back Johnson was still basking in the sensational solo goal which helped sink former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and move the Reds within striking distance of a Champions League spot.

The 2-1 win put Liverpool level on 22 points with their opponents as well as Arsenal in arguably the most fiercely contested battle ever to qualify for Europe's premier club competition.

Throw third-placed Tottenham Hotspur and fourth-placed Newcastle United into the equation as well and there is little margin for error for any of the sides currently hanging onto the coat-tails of Manchester City and Manchester United.

Liverpool, who have failed to qualify for the Champions League for the past two seasons, are certainly doing the business on their travels, having now won five successive matches away from home in all competitions.

But their inability to beat United, Norwich and Swansea at Anfield over the same period has proven costly.

"Normally a team's best form is at home," Johnson said.

"As long as we can start picking up a few more points at home and doing what we are doing away then we won't be too far away.

"We haven't been playing badly at home.

"We've created some fantastic chances and if we'd taken one of them in a few games then we'd have nine or 10 more points and it would make it a whole new ball game."

Eccleston back at Liverpool

The 20-year-old striker, who has made nine first team appearances for the Reds, scored on his debut for Rochdale against Exeter in October but failed to find the net in his next six games. His final appearance for the League One club came as a second-half substitute at Preston on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will hand a trial to 15-year-old Swedish midfielder Gustav Engvall.

The Farjestaden youngster, who has represented his country at under-15 level, is expected to travel to the Academy at the start of December.

Engvall said: "It will be great to see how everything works at a big club."

Liverpool Reserves face Sunderland at the Kirkby Academy today (2pm).
