Player Ratings: Chelsea 1-0 Stoke.

Didier Drogba's 100th Premier League goal helped Roberto Di Matteo to a win in his first League game in charge against the Potters who were reduced to 10 men in the first half
.

Chelsea FC
Petr Cech   6.5
Very rarely troubled with Stoke offering little going forward, especially after being reduced to 10 men.

Branislav Ivanovic    7.5
Rattled the bar during the latter stages of the first half in a robust display that saw him claim the right flank for his own with some powerful bursts. Subbed off after the break, perhaps suffering ill-effects from Fuller’s ugly stamp.

Ashley Cole     7.0
A typical Cole performance that saw him rarely, if ever, beaten one-on-one and full of forward impetus.

Gary Cahill    7.5
An impressive game that shows he is bedding into the Chelsea back four very well. Refused to be bullied by the problematic Kenwyne Jones and used his initiative to carry the ball forward and join in play.

John Terry   7.5
His return to action provided Chelsea with a stability at the back that filtered through the rest of the side. Unlucky to see his header bounce back off the bar in the first half.

Ramires    6.5
Full of running but found opportunities on the ball hard to come by. Stretched his opponents whenever possible and proved his value to the side through his omnipresence.

Frank Lampard    6.0
Apart from a few bright moments here and there, failed to deliver a constant or tangible threat. Perhaps unfamiliar with the new shape selected by Di Matteo, or maybe just an off day. Either way, not the most compelling of performances.

John Obi Mikel   6.5
Initially failed to impress at the fulcrum of the Chelsea midfield but grew in stature as the game developed. Such an evolution was likely given the tired legs of 10 man Stoke, but nevertheless provided a sturdy platform for the more advanced midfielders to build upon, before being withdrawn for the more attacking capabilities of Sturridge.

Raúl Meireles   6.0
Not his day on the ball. Scuffed shots and misplaced passes ensured that Chelsea failed to establish much rhythm early on and was unsurprisingly sacrificed for Juan Mata as the hosts sought to exploit the space brought about by the one man advantage.

Didier Drogba     7.0
Proved elusive in the first half but delivered the game’s decisive moment just after the hour mark when he collected Mata’s pass, rounded the keeper and tucked the ball into the empty net.

Salomon Kalou    6.0
Floated out to the left wing, to allow Chelsea’s onrushing midfield space to advance. Delivered a few bright balls into the box but otherwise found himself somewhat redundant and seemed to be unsure of his role.

• Substitutions
David Luiz    6.5
Replaced Ivanovic for the second half and provided much of the same as his predecessor. Looked menacing when he marauded forward and had very little to worry about facing the other way.

Juan Mata      Top of the Match     8.0

Chelsea become instantly more menacing with him on the pitch. Brought on to capitalise on the space afforded by Stoke’s reduced numbers and used the ball intelligently throughout. Was the architect of Drogba’s goal and really looked the only man in his side able to prize Stoke open.

Daniel Sturridge    6.0
Thrown into the mix in an attempt to give his side the lead. Was perhaps little surprise that his team went one up moments after he was introduced, given the home side’s utter domination. A few bright touches here and there but not much of substance.

Player Ratings: Chelsea 4-1 Napoli (Agg 5-4 after extra-time)

Branislav Ivanovic's emphatic finish in added time helped Roberto Di Matteo's side complete a stunning comeback to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals

Chelsea FC
Petr Cech   7.0

Can rarely have been so exerted in a Champions League tie. Rose to the occasion with a series of smart reflex stops that prevented further damage.

Branislav Ivanovic  7.5
His reputation suffered along with the rest of the defence in the first-leg pasting but he was far more adept in the second encounter. Won a series of important challenges and brilliantly bashed in the winning goal.

Ashley Cole  8.0
Commanding and alert, none of the old guard was more impressive than the England left-back.

David Luiz   6.5
Torn to shreds early on but recovered from his horrible start to deliver a reasonably accomplished display. Very influential whenever he ventured forwards.

John Terry    8.0
Outstanding sleeves-rolled-up performance from the Chelsea skipper. Showed his reservoirs of fortitude by recovering from a dodgy start to emphatically head in his team's second goal and make countless crucial interceptions. Loses half a point with the poor clearance that teed up Inler for his goal. Bowed to injury and subbed eight minutes into extra time.

Michael Essien   7.0
His tank was running on empty at times but still had enough fuel to cover the midfield heartlands and keep Chelsea in the tie.

Ramires   7.0
Roberto Di Matteo sprung a tactical surprise by deploying the Brazilian on the left flank but it worked a treat as he restricted Aronica's forward raids and set up Drogba for the opener with an excellent cross.

Frank Lamp   7.0
At times looked a spent force but his nous and force of personality pulled him through. His corner set up Terry for the second and his emphatic penalty drew Chelsea level on aggregate.

Juan Mata   6.5
His nimble feet and smart mind enabled him to find pockets of space and create problems in the hole behind Drogba but he simmered without ever reaching boiling point. Withdrawn early in extra time.

Didier Drogba   Top of the Match   8.0
Titanic centre-forward display just when Chelsea needed him most. Led the line brilliantly, opened the scoring with a fabulous diving header and only a great save prevented him adding another in the second half.

Daniel Sturridge   6.0
Began brightly and nearly scored in the early exchanges but faded and was withdrawn midway through the second half.

• Substitutions
José Bosingwa  6.0

Looked comfortable at right-back after replacing Terry.

Florent Malouda 6.0
Replaced the tiring Mata early in extra time and his energy helped Chelsea maintain command.

Fernando Torres    5.0
Replaced Sturridge midway through the second period and the Bridge willed him to win the tie but never looked like doing so and missed an open goal from a tight angle in the first half of extra time.
