The 21st Century’s Best Horror Movies (So Far)

Don Kaye Den of Geek

15 years in, we survey two dozen of the horror genre’s finest efforts this century.

Every once in a while, someone likes to declare that the horror genre is dead, and so far, every one of those predictions has been wrong. Horror movies have been around almost as long as filmmaking itself, and while the genre has always been cyclical in nature --dipping, sometimes drastically, in both quality and quantity from time to time -- all it usually takes is a well-timed box office hit, a fresh new angle or a hot young filmmaker to reanimate it again.

The 21st century has been, overall, an extremely healthy one for horror. There’s been the usual amount of dross, of course, but the genre has branched out in a number of interesting new directions as well. We had absolutely no problem tallying 24 movies for this article, and could probably do another 24 without breaking much of a sweat. But for now, here are two dozen terrifying favorites that you can use for your own personal Halloween film festival -- and we promise that this lineup delivers.

24. I Saw the Devil (2010)

Director Kim Ji-Woon (A Tale of Two Sisters) sends an intelligence agent (Lee Byung-hun) on a mission of vengeance against a sadistic serial killer (Choi Min-sik) in this shocking and stunningly depraved cat and mouse thriller in which all notions of morality go out the window along with numerous bloody body parts. Yet Kim keeps you invested in the characters as well, and this Korean epic has an undertone of sadness that’s hard to shake. Kim holds it all together masterfully, creating a horrifying experience like nothing else we saw the year it came out.

23. Martyrs (2008)

22. The Others (2001)

21. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

20. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

19. Trick 'R Treat (2007)

18. 28 Days Later (2002)

17. The Strangers (2008)

16. Kairo (2001)

15. Mulholland Drive (2001)

14. Insidious (2011)

13. Paranormal Activity (2010)

12. It Follows (2014)

11. [REC] (2007)

10. The Orphanage (2006)

9. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

8. The Mist (2007)

7. Session 9 (2001)

6. The Ring (2002)

5. The Descent (2005)

4. Kill List (2011)

3. The Babadook (2014)

2. The Devil's Backbone (2001)

1. Let the Right One In / Let Me In (2008/2010)

The Terminator will not be back

BY AGENCY

Following the poor box office performance of Terminator Genisys, Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t be back for more.

Paramount is putting any plans to make another Terminator movie well and truly on hold. The most recent outing of the cybernetic organism was meant to serve as a spring board for a new Terminator universe and with it a host of spin-offs and a new franchise.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Terminator Genisys failed to break even at the global box office once marketing costs are added to the initial budget, and so Paramount has decided to cease development of any future Terminator-related projects. – AFP Relaxnews

The Terminator: where next for the franchise?

If the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger was supposed to revive the Terminator franchise’s fortunes, then it’s fair to say that this year’s Terminator: Genisys fell short of expectations. While the fifth film in the series fared well in the Far East, Genisys’ sour reviews (not least our own) and lacklustre US box-office clearly took their toll. Late last week, we heard that the once-planned trilogy of Terminator films - and a related TV series - were "on hold indefinitely.”

The result is one of the weirdest would-be blockbusters in years. Terminator: Genisys is a kind of greatest hits reel of Terminators past; a muddled check-list of things that might, on paper, have sounded like perfectly sound ideas. The start of the film takes place in 1984 with a recreation of the film that started it all - perfect for getting older fans on side. But then it throws in a variation on the mercury-like T-1000 to please those who preferred its 1991 sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. And to capture a bit of that lucrative Asian market, the T-1000 is played by Byung-hun Lee.

Incomplete webtoon series interests actor Lee Byung Hun

By Shim Sun-ah

SEOUL, Oct. 8 (Yonhap) -- Actor Lee Byung-hun said Thursday he joined the cast of new Korean film "Inside Man" simply because the screenplay was intriguing.

"My own standard for choosing a film is if its screenplay is interesting enough, and that's the reason why I chose this one," Lee said during a news conference to promote the crime drama.

The film is based on the popular webtoon series by the same name, authored by Yoon Tae-ho who shot to fame for "Misaeng (Incomplete Life)."

Yoon abruptly stopped making the series less than three months after it was released in 2012, allegedly because he couldn't handle the enormous plot any longer.

"Actually, I didn't have a chance to read the original cartoon series before. It was also interesting that director Yoo Min-ho completed the story to adapt it into a film."

In the forthcoming film, Lee plays Ahn Sang-gu, a thug who is ruined and abandoned after being used by the owner of a large conglomerate and a political heavyweight who is a presidential candidate in the film. Sang-gu later accepts an offer from Yoo Jang-hoon (Jo Seung-woo), an ambitious prosecutor who is ready to do everything to be promoted, to take revenge against the political, business and media heavyweights who ruined him.

Veteran actor Baek Yoon-sik took the role of a famous editorial writer of an influential daily who designs and orchestrates the dark connection between the political and business bigwigs.

Directed by Yoo who previously made two feature films, "Man Of Vendetta" (2010) and "The Spies" (2012), the film is scheduled to be out in November.
