DEVGAN: STAGE SHOWS NEVER

Ajay Devgan and his wife Kajol are becoming popular among screen watchers. While Ajay continues to draw crowds in his movies on the big screen, Kajol has just begun attracting the people towards her ads on the small screen. The recent commercials with both Ajay and Kajol have been widely appreciated. We have witnessed this in Delhi when huge crowds have been thronging around locations scheduled for her shooting of Yash Chopra's home production 'Fanna'. Kajol is acting along with Aamir Khan in this movie after about eight years since both acted in 'Ishq'.

Kajol confesses that she feels a bit nervous as she is facing camera after a long gap. However, she is turning confident following her commercials shot in the recent past along with her husband. Has she lost her earlier status after marriage? She denies it. "Even Saira Bano, Sharmila Tagore, Rakhi and Dimple haven't lost their positions after marriage. Then why should I?" About his commercials, Ajay says that he has never been against them though he has taken a long time to begin with them. What about doing stage shows like other actors? Ajay quips, "No, I shall never do stage shows".

Wither Aftaab?

The story of Chocolate boy Aftab Shivdasani is strange. He commenced his career from Ram Gopal Varma's 'Mast' with Urmila Matondkar. This brought him in the focus on Bollywood. Since then, Aftaab leaves no stone unturned to avail any opportunity coming his way. He doesn't mind doing films with multi stars too. Aftaab was declared to be a flopper, as many of his movies didn't hit the box office. But suddenly he had a hit in 'Hungama'. The credit for the success of the film goes to Paresh Rawal, and not so much to Aftaab. Any way, Aftaab is lucky, as he never fails because someone comes to his rescue. But he knows that he cannot depend on chance. Therefore, he is making all efforts to make his films prove hits. Let's keep our fingers crossed. His forthcoming movies will prove if he is a hit man or a flop.

Esha finds Tamil tough

Esha Deol seems to be struggling with Tamil on the sets of Mani Ratnam's 'Yuva'. Esha Deol who replaced Simran is finding it difficult to speak Tamil on the sets even after struggling hard. Her mother Hema Malini manoeuvered to get her this film. Hema did not realize that Esha's Anglicised Tamil couldn't do justice to Tamilian audience.

Sanju's respect for Amitabh

Like any other artiste, Sunjay Dutt is not far behind in showing respect to the Big B. It is learnt that he signed to do 'Ranveer' for Amitabh Bachchan's revived AB Corp. Moreover, he didn't care to know the role he is supposed to play, which is a negative one. Besides, Sanjay says he will do this without any fee. When asked, he said, "I will do anything for Mr Bachchan. He is god to me." Is he repaying Bachchan for the latter's obligation as Bachchan worked in Sanjay's 'Kaante' without any fee. Sanjay says he is doing it out of respect for Mr Bachchan.

POOJA BATRA'S COME BACK BID

Pooja Batra's filmi career is on decline. The industry lists several reasons for this. On top is their marriage. Whenever a heroine gets married, the directors and the producers write off her for a couple of years. They consider their marriage followed up by a honeymoon tour abroad plus the couple's desire to have babies. When the heroine has enjoyed their marriage and given birth to a baby, they get bored of their idle life and decide to return to filmdom. The directors and the producers value them low and avoid giving then lead roles.

Of course, there are some brilliant actresses who do get even coveted roles after entering the family life. Pooja Batra is doing the same. She is sure to get an offer in 'Bombay Dreams On Broadway' because 'Bombay Dreams...' is very impressed by Pooja's singing talent. Besides, Pooja thinks that she has a better chance than other married heroines, as she doesn't look an Indian woman. She claims to have an offer from a leading advertising agency. Despite this, she is yet to find a suitable offer in the film industry though Pooja is hopeful to get one very soon.

AKSHAY REFUSES SUNEEL'S 'AASHIRWAD'

Has Producer-director Suneel Darshan fallen out with Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta? It is not uncommon for an artiste-filmmaker combination going kaput after the two seemed to be sharing a strong personal bonding. Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, Manoj Bajpai and Ramgopal Varma, Govinda and Pahlaj Nihalani, Govinda and David Dhawan, Salman Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali (fortunately for them they are back again) are some of the cases from the past that cross your mind when you think of things going sour between Akshay Kumar and Suneel Darshan.

Apparently, Suneel Darshan has planned his next film titled 'Aashirwad', and surprisingly only Priyanka Chopra has been finalized for it. Interestingly, although Akshay Kumar was offered the film, he turned down Suneel's offer. However, Suneel chooses to remain mum about the whole thing. "I am not talking about the film right now. Priyanka Chopra is definitely a part of every film that I plan. We enjoy working together." He again prefers the silence mode when quizzed about his other heroine, Lara Dutta, in 'Andaaz'. "I have no comments about her. I don't want any kind of controversy. I do not want to say something that might be misconstrued and misquoted."

And whatever has prompted his favorite Akshay Kumar to refuse the film? He replies with a laugh, "Is he not? Akshay is a buddy. We are already working together in 'Mere Jeevan Saathi'. We have completed 60% of the film and will resume shooting next week. Akshay has been part of my company since 'Jaanwar'. That was the film that brought him back from his downhill status. Then he did 'Ek Rishtaa - A Bond Of Love' with us. This gave him the opportunity to work with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time. It gave him a platform of dignity. He will continue to be a part of my company till he chooses to. It is up to him to decide for how long he wants to be associated with us. All I have to say to this is that everything is cool between us."

The reasons for the fallout are not clear but the fact that Akshay and Lara happen to be thick friends could have something to do with both of them harboring a problem with Darshan. Dharamesh and Suneel have been two producers who have repeatedly pampered Akshay and indulged him. He was even paid up to Rs 2 crore at a time, which is what even prompted Kumar to do a turkey like 'Talaash'. This will be Suneel's second fallout with a 'buddy'. Sunny Deol and Suneel had been thick at one time. They even did three films, 'Insaniyat', 'Lootere' and then 'Ajay' (this one had marked Suneel's directorial debut) together. It is common knowledge that Suneel had lent him money for a movie, which has not been returned for long. Sunny is said to have chased him out of his office when Suneel dropped in to ask for his money. Finally, after waiting for years, he approached the Film Makers' Combine to get justice.

Recently, Akshay had fallout with producer Gaurang Doshi aftere 'Aankhen', when he felt that he was not adequately publicized. We have always maintained that this industry is a place where the best of friendships are known to turn sour overnight! The reason? Bollywood is a place of convenience where people unscrupulously use each other in the guise of friendship. In this case, we're keeping our readers guessing on the names. Isn't it obvious?

Akshay Kumar

AISHWARYA'S PIX SOLD FOR 25,000

A simple color photograph of Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai fetched 500 to add to the nearly 25,000 rose at a Christie's auction t for street children in India. Organised in aid of Mumbai-based charity Magic Bus, the lots that went under the hammer included a cricket bat signed by legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar, which sold for 1,100 and a Rajasthan palace tour that fetched 4,000.

The celebrity gathering included filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, Mahindra and Mahindra managing director Anand Mahindra and NRI businessmen and millionaires. Matthew Spacie, the founder of the organization, said, "Magic Bus was a response to my desire to work with children and young adults through the outdoors and sports. It works with 15 primary intervention organisations in India and has changed the lives of nearly 3,500 slum children since its inception in Mumbai in 1999. The idea is to take the children on a magic ride and convert the outdoors into a classroom away from the squalor and misery of their daily lives." The funds raised here will help the group set up base in Delhi and Kolkata. The NRI community pitched in to help. From designer clothes and a year's supply of Indian Cobra beer, there was also some fierce bidding for tickets to the rugby world cup final in Australia and a silver-based dildo

SUSHMITA SEN ACTS AS COP IN 'SAMAY'

We noticed Former Miss World Sushmita Sen recently at Delhi airport. When asked about her sudden visit, she said she came to the Capital to promote her forthcoming movie 'Samay'. Delhi is not new to her. She has lived for several years and this city gave her the proud privilege of being crowned Miss World. Speaking about her role in her forthcoming movie 'Samay',Sen said she was happy to act as an ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police) who has to deal with the crime and the criminals. She has tried to solve murder mystery in 'Samay'. When she reaches the edge of solving the mystery, she is surprised that the murderer is a genius sort of a man. She cannot believe it though. How far is it true? This is a challenging role for Sushmita in 'Samay' and she does it excellently well.

She is proud of her role as an ACP and considers this role as model for Indian women. Honest and sincere women are succeeding in their lives and they should feel proud of themselves, she added. "I want to do challenging roles only. I wish to do select movies only because the audiences welcome those who are not seen every now and then. I have never depended on dieting or going to the gym to remain fit. I eat whatever comes my way".

AMITABH RECEIVES A NOTICE

Amitabh Bachchan has recently been issued a notice by Pune district authorities, asking him to authenticate his claim of being a farmer.

Bachchan purchased 20 acres of land near Pavana dam in Maval in 2000.

He had the land registered in his name on the basis of documents allegedly proclaiming him to be a farmer at Jaunpur near New Delhi.

Under the Tenancy and Agricultural Land Act, 1963 only farmers can buy agricultural land in the state.

He said that the authorities were waiting for the submission of original documents for verification.

DESTINY MADE NAMRATA ACTOR

Like many of her colleagues , former Miss India Namrata Shirodkar also wanted to pursue a profession other than acting in films. She wished to become an airhostess. But , the destiny made her an actress , and she attributes this to her mother who has been a model herself, and her sister, a dancer in films.

Later, Namrata left the film world of Mumbai to marry with Mahesh, the super star of the south India, and settled down in Hyderabad. Her marriage has proved a bliss in her life, yet she doesn't outright reject returning to movies. However, that would depend on the offer she gets.

Was acting your cherished dream?

No. In fact, I wished to be an airhostess as I had a friend in that profession. I liked traveling and wearing good clothes.

How did you join films?

My mother was in modeling and my sister in films. My mom wanted me to pursue my sister's profession. I give all credit to my mother for introducing me to films. She has made me what I am today. To begin with, I had a photo session with top photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksh, and the rest followed.

How did you come across Mahesh?

I met with him for the first time at the sets of a Telugu movie. He is great indeed! Though he is a very big artiste, yet he hasn't broken his link with his roots. He is still simple.

Did you change after marrying a super star?

No, he hasn't ever asked me to look different. However, I do try to meet the expectations of his fans. I am very happy that he has accepted me.

Don't you miss Mumbai's fast life in Hyderabad?

No, I don't because I never went out at night in Mumbai. So, I don't miss anything. Yes, I miss my parents and friends.

Are you happy with your marriage?

I am very happy to have a break. However, I cannot say that I shall never return to acting. I shall accept if I get a good offer. But I shall have to balance both -- films and married life. Marriage does bring a change, it makes one responsible.

What about your tomboy childhood?

Yes, I was elder to my sister Shilpa. So, I had to take care of our home.

Didn't your dancer sister influence you?

Oh yes, my sister Shilpa was a good dancer . Everyone compared my dance with hers. Saroj Khan pointed out my mistakes and asked me to follow her . She showed me Shilpa's cassettes too.

When did you pick up dancing?

I think I began liking my work after doing two movies -'Pukaar' and 'Vastav'. Then I picked up dancing too

Any more dreams?

Yes, I wish my first movie 'Purab Ki Laila, Paschim Ka Chhaila' to release soon as it has been lying canned for long . I feel it is a good movie. It has a good script and an equally nice cast.

SAIF ALI FEELS THE PINCH

While Saif Ali Khan has been bagging some interesting assignments lately, he doesn't seem to be wholly excited about the way his roles have been shaping up, or so we hear. First there were rumors that he felt Urmila Matondkar was given more footage in Ram Gopal Varma's forthcoming 'Ek Haseena Thi' (something Ramu vehemently denies), now we hear that he isn't particularly pleased with his role in Karan Johar's 'Kal Ho Na Ho', co-starring Shar Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta. We don't know if this is true, but if it is, Saif should have known that in the Johar camp, Shah Rukh rules!

To be tall is a curse too

If the lack of inches is a curse, then being tall has its disadvantages too. Amitabh Bachchan who tops the six-feet mark should know. The actor has a problem with small cars, short doorways and low ceilings. Even the plastic molded chairs on the sets are too close to the ground for comfort. So when Bachchan walks out he holds up two fingers. That's a signal for the spot boy to stack one chair over another, before offering it to the actor with long legs. Sometimes the superstar can even be seen perched on top of three chairs and no, this is not a tall tale!

Pooja Bhatt is directing 'Paap'. This is her directorial debut. As we are aware that she believes that to hit a film at the box office, the movies need to have bold scenes and body exposure. SUNNY GROWS REAL BEARD FOR SIKH COP ROLE

Instead of using a fake beard, Sunny Deol has grown a real one for his formidable Sardarji cop role as Nihal Singh in Pachisia's 'Jo Bole So Nihaal' where he plays the patriotic rebel cop who exposes hi-tech dreaded terrorist Shah Alam (Kamaal Khan). Deol will also use his sardarji get-up in his home-production 'Gandhi' (nothing to do with the Mahatma though).
