B’z achieves 70th #1, total sales of 80 million
Posted on August 1, 2011 by tokyograph

Last week, rock duo B'z released their 18th original album “C'mon.” According to Oricon sales numbers released today, it sold 272,000 copies in its first week to become their 70th release to reach #1 on the charts (counting singles and albums). In addition, their total lifetime sales has surpassed 80 million, a first in Oricon history.

Since their debut in 1988, B’z has sold 35,255,000 copies of their singles and 44,791,000 copies of their albums, adding up to a current total of 80,046,000. So far, they have had 15 singles and 19 albums (including best albums) that have sold more than a million copies.

Mr.Children is currently in second place at 54,979,000 copies, while Hamasaki Ayumi is in third at 49,577,000 copies.

B’z also extended their record for “most #1 albums” to 25, widening the gap between them and Matsutoya Yumi (21 #1 albums). Added to their 45 #1 singles, they are the first artist in Oricon history to have 70 #1 releases, far more than Hamasaki Ayumi who is in second place with 54.

It is widely recognized that the late enka singer Michiya Mihashi reached 100 million copies of his works in 1983, but a significant portion of his career took place before Oricon started compiling sales charts in 1968.

Charts: Kis-My-Ft2, Yamashita Tatsuro, ZARD
Posted on August 17, 2011 by tokyograph

The Johnny's group Kis-My-Ft2 finally released their first single after years as an undebuted group. “Everybody Go” took #1 in the rankings at nearly 316,000 copies sold. Excluding artists who debuted after being part of a debuted group, Kis-My-Ft2 is now #3 on Oricon’s all-time list of highest first-week sales for a debut single. They are surpassed only by fellow Johnny’s groups KAT-TUN (“Real Face,” 754,000) and Arashi (“A·RA·SHI,” 557,000).

Kis-My-Ft2 is the 12th male group in Oricon history to reach #1 with a debut single. They also have the honor of setting the record for first-week sales by a debut artist this year, beating out NMB48’s “Zetsumetsu Kurokami Shoujo” (218,000).

Another single that set a record this week is the hit song “Maru Maru Mori Mori!” by 7-year-old child stars Ashida Mana and Suzuki Fuku. The song rose two spots to #5 and claimed its 12th consecutive week in the Top 10. Among singles that have included an artist under 10 years old, “Maru Maru Mori Mori!” now has the longest Top 10 streak, passing the 2007 song “Gake no Ue no Ponyo” that featured Ohashi Nozomi, who was 9 years old at the time.

Kis-My-Ft2 – Everybody Go – 315,781
DiVA – Cry – 56,053
Choshinsei – Kimi Dake wa Hanasanai – 35,518

Counting only original albums, this is his first in 13 years. He is just the 4th artist to have a #1 album in 4 consecutive decades (from the ’80s to the ’10s), after Matsutoya Yumi, Tokunaga Hideaki, and Kuwata Keisuke.

In DVDs, “ZARD What a beautiful memory ~forever you~” sold 8,373 copies to capture #1 on the general charts. The DVD contains footage from the memorial concert on May 27 of this year, said to be the final one held in her honor. ZARD’s last chart-topping DVD was “ZARD Le Portfolio 1991-2006” in October 2006, about half a year before her death.

Since Oricon began publishing DVD sales rankings in 1994, this is just the second time that a deceased artist has topped the overall category (Michael Jackson was the first). In Oricon’s earlier video rankings, Ozaki Yutaka and hide also topped the charts after their deaths.
