Tottenham 1-5 Chelsea: Mata 'ghost goal' helps steer rampant Blues into FA Cup final at expense of sorry Spurs.
Harry Redknapp's side were enraged when referee Martin Atkinson awarded a controversial strike just after half-time but Roberto Di Matteo's men warmed up for Barcelona in style
Chelsea benefited from a controversial "ghost goal" from Juan Mata but were otherwise comfortable in defeating Tottenham 5-1 to advance to the FA Cup final.
Rafael van der Vaart had efforts off the line and against the post in the first half – but Didier Drogba’s sensational turn-and-shot ensured, out of nothing, a half-time Blues lead.
Referee Martin Atkinson incited shock after the restart when he judged that Mata's effort had bypassed a crowd on the line and gone in, though Spurs' anger lifted a little when Bale slotted home shortly after.
A late treble for the Blues, though - Ramires' finish after beating the offside trap and a fantastic free-kick strike from Frank Lampard before Florent Malouda's last-gasp fifth - ensured their advancement to face Liverpool next month.
Harry Redknapp surprised some by keeping faith in former Blue Carlo Cudicini as his preferred FA Cup goalkeeper, while Van der Vaart, Emmanuel Adebayor, Scott Parker and William Gallas all also came in after Spurs' loss to Norwich City.
Chelsea, meanwhile, opted for Drogba up front with Fernando Torres a substitute as David Luiz and Ashley Cole returned to the defence, replacing Gary Cahill and Ryan Bertrand.
The game started on a sour note as a pocket of Chelsea fans jeered during a pre-match minute’s silence in memory of those who died at the Hillsborough disaster as well as Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini.
Once underway, the game started slowly. Drogba had an early chance when he peeled away from his marker chasing a long ball, but mistimed his attempted volley in the box.
Both teams looked cagey but Chelsea needed some great defending when Lampard’s decisive slide tackle robbed Parker in the box.
There was a nervy moment for Spurs in the 26th minute when Chelsea broke forward, Salomon Kalou seizing the ball from Kyle Walker and splitting the defence but Juan Mata, alone in the box, was outpaced slightly by the pass and Cudicini collected safely from his fleeting touch.
Kalou was again involved shortly after when he delivered a nagging cross from the left. Drogba rose to meet it but Ledley King intervened to divert it out.
Spurs nearly took the lead on 36 minutes, however. Lennon received the ball in the box near the right-hand post but spied Van der Vaart advancing from the penalty spot and dinked a short-range cross, but the Dutchman’s header, past Petr Cech, met Terry on the line, whose knee kept it out.
If Adebayor had got a similar touch with his knee when he lunged to meet a stunning cross from the right from Van der Vaart, it might again have been 1-0, but as it was the delivery bypassed both he and Cech before coming back off the post.
And Spurs’ failure to capitalise was punished when Drogba struck. Out of nothing, the striker received the ball with his back to goal. He seemed to be heading away from danger when he touched it to the left, but instead swivelled around Gallas and hammered it left-footed past the helpless Cudicini.
After the break, Chelsea pushed for a second. Drogba battled in the box but reluctantly allowed Mata to strike when his touch fell better for the Spaniard – Cudicini, though, saved well low to his left.
Controversy struck a moment later, though, as an almighty scramble in the box saw players pile up along the line and Mata get a shot into the melee. From some distance away, referee Atkinson ruled that it crossed the line, but television replays appeared inconclusive whilst Spurs protested.
Tottenham, though, got back into it within five minutes. Adebayor powered through the centre and Cech rushed forward to meet him. The keeper brought the Togolese down clearly but was spared a red card as Bale was on hand to knock it into the net. Luiz, seemingly badly hurt tussling with Adebayor in the build-up, was then instantly replaced by Cahill.
After that explosion of events a brief lull came. King was on hand in the Chelsea box some time after, rising for a Van der Vaart corner, but his header was diverted just wide.
Spurs then rued that block when Ramires made it 3-1 in the 77th minute. Walker’s deep position allowed Mata to dink the ball forward for the advanced Ramires without fear of offside, the pass picking him out perfectly, and the Brazilian promptly buried it.
The tie seemed confirmed in swift fashion thereafter. A desperate, farfetched penalty shout for a Cahill handball was followed by a free-kick for Chelsea at the other end. Lampard stepped up to fire it into the corner from range, a fine hit in keeping with his all-time best.
Tempers flared in stoppage time, with Parker needing restraining by team-mates in reaction to a John Obi Mikel kick, but substitute Malouda confirmed the rout by finishing between Cudicini's legs following a Mata assist. |

Tottenham vs Chelsea Player Ratings
Chelsea benefited from a controversial "ghost goal" from Juan Mata but were otherwise comfortable in defeating Tottenham 5-1 to advance to the FA Cup final.
Rafael van der Vaart had efforts off the line and against the post in the first half - but Didier Drogba's sensational turn-and-shot ensured, out of nothing, a half-time Blues lead.
Chelsea
Petr Cech - 5.5
Lucky not to be sent-off after bringing down Adebayor in the build-up to Bale's goal, which could have resulted in a penalty and red card. Cech was also lucky not to concede a goal from Van der Vaart's header, requiring Terry to clear off the line.
Jose Bosingwa - 5
Bosingwa struggled against Bale's pace throughout. One can only wonder how he will fare if (a big if) he starts against Barcelona with their speedy wingers.
David Luiz (Off 59') - 7.5
Luiz covered well for Bosingwa and made several intelligent interceptions to nullify threats before they can develop. He picked up a hamstring injury on the build up to Tottenham's goal.
John Terry - 7.5
Contributed in the usual style he does defensively, clearing Van der Vaart's header off the line and managing with Tottenham's attack throughout.
Ashley Cole - 6.5
Pinned back by Lennon most of the game, Cole was solid and dependable down his flank and was there to tuck in and help when needed.
Jon Obi Mikel - 5
Mikel anchored the midfield with an excellent display breaking up play and was the unsung hero in this tie. However, he should have been sent off late in the game after needlessly lashing out at Scott Parker when the England captain offered him a hand to help him up. Utterly unsporting behaviour that has no place in football.
Frank Lampard - 7.5
A neat and bright display from Lampard saw him take a deeper role and orchestrate Chelsea's win with precise passing. He grabbed a stunning goal with a freekick from 30 yards that left Cudicini little chance.
Ramires (Off 82') - 7.5
A hardworking performance from Ramires, who was always chasing the ball and hounding Tottenham into their own half. Ramires did well to hold the ball up and provide extra avenues for his colleagues.
Juan Mata - 7.5
Although his 'goal' was scored amidst controversial circumstances, Mata was dangerous all night long slipping dangerous passes forward, setting up Ramires and Malouda's goals with two excellent assists.
Saloman Kalou - 7
Frustrated the Chelsea fans with some wayward shooting but played a key role for the Blues, especially on the break. Also tracked back well to help Cole against Lennon.
Didier Drogba (Off 84') - 8.5
Drogba turned back the time with a stunning strike to break the deadlock to ease the tension from his side with Spurs slightly dominating the first half. He was constantly a nuisance for Tottenham but it was apparent that his old sharpness was gone, given that he missed a free shot on goal but scuffed the shot.
Substitutes
Gary Cahill (On 59') - 7
Came on and filled in solidly in defence.
Florent Malouda (On 82')
Fernando Torres (On 84') |

Chelsea vs Barcelona Player Ratings
Didier Drogba gave Chelsea the 1-0 win against Barcelona who failed to make their dominance count in their Champions League semi-final first leg at Stamford Bridge.
Drogba wasted two good opportunities to grab an early goal and Barca went on to dominate, with Alexis Sanchez hitting the bar and Cesc Fabregas seeing an effort cleared off the line shortly after the former Arsenal man missed a sitter deep inside the Chelsea box.
Then, in the second minute of injury time in the first half Frank Lampard released Ramires down the wing, he crossed for Drogba, who slotted beyond Victor Valdes to give the Londoners the lead and this also proved to be the winning goal.
Hope is not lost for Barcelona though as UEFA points out that teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including Benfica, APOEL, Bayern Munich and Chelsea in this season's round of 16.
Chelsea
Cech - 9
Fortune favours the brave and Cech was one Chelsea player who deserved all the luck he could get. He was a man-mountain in between the sticks for Chelsea and when he did get beaten, the goal posts and crossbar came to his aid.
With Chelsea hanging on to their slim lead in the second half, he also produced two fantastic saves - one on Adriano in the 51st minute and one against Puyol in the 87th minute - to ensure that it is advantage Chelsea for the second leg.
Ivanovic - 7.5
Solid in defence, Ivanovic was, in a bizarre twist to the game, also Chelsea's main attacking outlet in a first half dominated by Barcelona. It may not look pretty, but Ivanovic's long throw-ins in the first half actually troubled the Catalans more than anything else they did and provided some much need respite for his fellow defenders.
Cole - 8.5
Cole was absolutely superb against Barcelona. If you want to know how to beat Barcelona, it is by having defenders like Cole switched on all game. His tracking back and understanding of the clever runs being made by the opposition saved the Blues on many occasions during the match. None more so than in the 43rd minute when he cleared the ball off the line after Fabregas managed to dink the ball over Cech and at the Chelsea goal.
Cahill - 7
It was tale of two halves for Cahill on Wednesday night. He was pretty poor in the first half with regards to his positioning. In fact, a more generous referee might have even awarded a penalty against the Englishman after he brought down Iniesta in the box - he never should have allowed the Spaniard to turn him so easily on the goal line.
However, he came out for the second half a different player and made two courageous blocks in the space of eight minutes as the Blues defended their 1-0 lead.
Terry - 7.5
Terry had his hands full trying not to get caught square by the much quicker Sanchez and overall the Chelsea skipper did very well against the defending European champions. It was not so much his tackling being the main highlight of his night, it was more to do with the way he communicated and marshaled the Chelsea defence which impressed us the most.
Ramires (Off 88') - 7.5
Ramires was deployed by Di Matteo in a defensive role down the left in a bid to stop Alves from getting forward too often - he did this job pretty well. However, he also did a little bit more for his team by providing the perfect ball into the box for Drogba to score what proved to be the winning goal.
Lampard - 6.5
Lampard is a Chelsea legend. No doubt about that. But against opposition who keep the ball as well as Barca do and who press incessantly when they don't have the ball, let's face it the old legs of Lampard struggles quite badly. He was anonymous in fact for large chunks of the game but in typical Lampard fashion his one contribution was telling. The England international stole the ball from Messi to start the move which resulted in the only goal of the game.
Mikel - 5.5
Perhaps a controversial rating, but in our view Mikel was totally out of his depth against Barcelona. He doesn't look comfortable with his back to goal and gave the ball away far too many times for Chelsea and it almost cost them dearly in the first half.
Meireles - 6
Chelsea's midfield were pretty ordinary - then again this happens to most teams that come up against Barcelona. The Portuguese looked like a headless chicken running around the pitch showing plenty of energy but with not much direction.
Mata (Off 74') - 6.5
It was a hard sort of game for a creative player like Mata to shine in given how defensive Chelsea were and how little of the ball they saw. However, he was calm and tidy in midfield for the most part.
Drogba - 8.5
It was a performance that was all heart. Drogba looked like a spent force as the half-time whistle approached. Barcelona were totally controlling the game and Drogba was not getting much joy as the lone striker.
Aside from a few moments of individual skill in the early part of the game, he spent most of the first half lying on the ground and getting caught offside.
The next thing you know, Lampard dispossesses Messi in midfield and releases Ramires down the left. The Brazilian cuts across the area to the Ivorian who finishes left-footed past Valdes from close.
The goal transformed him and he was incredible in the second half, holding up the ball valiantly for the Blues as they fought their way to a 1-0 victory.
Subs
Kalou (On 74') - 6
Kalou was a fraction away from stealing the limelight with a second goal. After a good counter attacking move from Chelsea saw Drogba break , he tried to tee up Kalou in the box but the ball was too long.
Bosingwa (On 88') - N/A |
