South Korean Actress Adds Diversity to US TV

Korean-American actress Kim Yun-jin says the success of "Lost," one of the hottest US TV series, proves "you don't need all Caucasians in their 20s to have a hit show any more," writes Min Lee.

Despite starring in one of America's hottest TV shows, "Lost" actress Kim Yun-jin says she cherishes her South Korean roots and plans to continue working in her native homeland.

The 33-year-old actress was born in Seoul but emigrated to the United States when she was 10, growing up in Staten Island, New York.

After a stint at the High School of Performing Arts in New York and graduating from Boston University with an acting degree, she returned to South Korea, where she made her name in the 1999 spy thriller "Shiri" and on local TV.

It's left the actress feeling "50 percent Korean and 50 percent American," she says in an e-mail interview.

"Growing up in the United States, I felt more American than Korean," she says. "When I moved back to Korea to work as an actress, I learned to value my culture deeply and studied Korean language all over again ... I learned to take good things from each culture to shape my attitude toward life."

Her big break in the US came when she landed the role of Sun in the hit TV series "Lost," about a group of plane crash survivors who struggle to survive on a mysterious island.

Kim said she has enjoyed the evolution of her character. She said in an earlier interview that she was initially concerned that Sun was too submissive.

"I think Sun really progressed as a character on 'Lost.' It's wonderful to play such a complex character. Seeing Sun grow throughout the season has been a great challenge as an actress. I look forward to more depth, more power and more secrets to Sun," she said.

Sun is an English speaker but initially hides her language skills from the other survivors.

Kim acknowledges that there are fewer roles available to Asian actors in Hollywood, but she says the situation is changing, especially with the success of "Lost" and another TV show, "Heroes," which features Japanese-American actor Masi Oka.

"It's been proven you can have a hit show with a diverse cast," she said. "You don't need all Caucasians in their 20s to have a hit show any more. I'm very proud to be part of this change."

Kim says she hopes to continue working in both the US and South Korea.

"What sets me apart in the US is my experience in Korean TV and films," she says. "What sets me apart in Korea is I'm the first actress to cross over to Hollywood. I need both to make me special."

Kim recently made the South Korean thriller "Seven Days," which has drawn more than 1.7 million viewers. She says the Hollywood production company Summit Entertainment, which made "Mr and Mrs Smith" and "Vanilla Sky," has bought the remake rights to the film.

She also says it's important to encourage South Korean film makers and opposes the government's decision to slash the number of domestic movies South Korean cinemas need to show each year. South Korea's government drew outrage last year when it said local cinemas only needed to screen domestic films 73 days a year, down from 146.

Kim says the higher quota is "crucial" to the Korean industry as it allows smaller-budget films to be shown.

"I don't think we can afford to cut down on the screen quota," she said. "We're losing this battle and it could be detrimental to the industry."

'Bad Love' has good Christmas

After a slew of historical dramas, the latest KBS tear jerker "Bad Love" promised viewers a break from old school epics with its all-star cast and classic love story. But audiences weren't interested. That is, until now. With the competition heating up, the New Year may just bring "Bad Love" a bit of good luck.

"Bad Love," which first aired on Dec. 3, failed to draw interest with viewer ratings reaching a low 6.1 percent following its first episode, according to AGB Nielsen Media Research. The star power of high profile celebs, Lee Yo-won, 27, and Kwon Sang-woo, 31, proved no match for rivals, MBC's "Isan" and SBS's "The King and I" a.k.a. "Eunuch."

After a long hiatus from the world of TV dramas, Hallyu star Kwon Sang-woo tried to win fans over with his rippling pecs and picture-perfect abs in the first few episodes. But to no avail.

"I think Kwon Sang-woo is doing it as a service to his fans," said viewer Lee Young-hyun, 51. "He is trying to reach out to them."

Lee went on to state that not only was Kwon Sang-woo miscast, but that Lee Yo-won's previous role in SBS's "Doctor Bong" left such a strong impression on him that he had trouble buying into her new character, Na In-jung.

Other viewers seemed to be equally turned off by "Bad Love." According to TNS Media Korea, the drama's seventh episode recorded viewer ratings of 6.3 percent, a mere 0.2 percent improvement from its first episode.

But this KBS drama might still just manage to beat out its competition, or at least give them a run for their money. Its latest and eighth episode, which aired Christmas Day, posted record a viewer share of 9.2 percent, up 2.9 percent from the previous episode.

After the latest installment, one viewer wrote on the drama's bulletin board: "On Tuesday, I was switching back and forth between "Isan" and "Bad Love" and in the end I picked "Bad Love," even though I am a huge fan of historical dramas."

Another viewer said, "Most dramas get predictable right about now, but this drama's unpredictability makes it attractive."

Indeed, what started off as a classic love triangle is quickly developing into a melodrama of epic proportions, as heroine Na In-jung's father suddenly passes away and hero Yong-gi, played by heartthrob Kwon, falls victim to a car accident in the final moments of the latest installment.

For those who haven't been tuning in, In-jung, struggling to recover from a torrid affair with a married man, pretty much sums up the plot when she answers Yong-gi's question, "What do you think love is?"

"Love!? It's bad ... it's wicked ... it's so twisted and evil, that it's sad ..." In-jung replies.

And Lee Yo-won's character means every word she says. After being attacked and tortured by the jealous wife of her lover, In-jung gets spurned by her lover, miscarries her lovechild, loses her mother and must look after her invalid father while eking out a living as the owner of a small fried chicken restaurant in a remote island village.

Kwon's character, Yong-gi, recently scarred by his girlfriend's sudden suicide, falls in love with In-jung, only to discover that his brother-in-law is In-jung's ex-lover. In-jung, overwhelmed by all this, runs away.

And if that wasn't bad enough, in the last episode, In-jung's father suddenly passes away and Yong-gi, determined to stand by In-jung, is hit by a car while chasing after her.

With a plot like that "Bad Love" certainly lives up to its reputation as a melodrama.

And even if this tear jerker doesn't win the ratings race, it sure wins hands down for being one of the most tragic stories to hit television screens this winter.

But to find out what happens to Yong-gi, viewers will have to wait until New Year's Day, when episode 9 airs.

"Bad Love" plays on Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:55 p.m. on KBS 2 TV.

Hwang Jung-min shows off musical talent

Not many people know that Hwang Jung-min, now a famous movie star, was once an under-the-radar actor in a number of musical productions. Debuted in a long-running hit musical "Subway Line 1" (1994), Hwang performed in musicals such as "Broadway 42nd" (2004), "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1997) and "Cats" (1999) before he gained popularity with the film "A Good Lawyer's Wife" (2003). Now regarded as one of Korea's A-list film actors, Hwang has earned many awards for his versatility.

Inviting the audience to appreciate his unknown musical talent, the 37-year-old is making a surprise return to the stage with the Korean rendition of the Broadway musical "Nine."

After a four-year hiatus on the stage, Hwang takes the role of Guido Contini, a film director facing a midlife crisis. Based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti, which was inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film "8 1/2," the musical tells a story of a 40-year-old man entangled in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice.

The Broadway production, directed by Tommy Tune and choreographed by Tommie Walsh, opened in May 1982. It eventually won five Tony Awards, including for best musical of the year. In 2003, the remake of the musical, which starred Antonio Banderas as Guido, hit the stage. The performance earned him a Tony Award nomination.

Hwang was confident and attractive enough on the stage when he sang two songs for critics and reporters last week. But he said he still feels pressure. "I am under great pressure because I am playing the only male character which leads the rest of the cast on the stage," said Hwang. "And I also feel pressure because there are a lot of people watching me over the show, who don't initially recognize me as a stage actor but as a movie star."

David Swan, the producer of the musical, encouraged Hwang, saying that he is the right one for the role.

"The role of Guido requires an actor a great range and he's just a perfect actor for the show, like the rest of the cast," said Swan.

Hwang is to lead a cast of 15 women in the Korean production of "Nine." In this story, the women in the Italian director's life include his wife, mistress, leading lady, mother, first sexual encounter and producer. The cast of women characters draws attention as the show features the award-winning musical actress Kim Sun-young who takes the role of Guido's wife Luisa, Yang So-min as protege Claudia and Chung Sun-ah as mistress Carla.

Feeling lucky to play with a group of attractive and talented actresses, Hwang said: "I heard a lot of people saying that I am very fortunate to work with so many beautiful actresses like Jeon Do-yeon and Jun Ji-hyun. But I guess this musical is the best."

It seems like the musical is offering a moment of reflection for Hwang who wanted to stimulate his acting career.

"A child grows up but an adult also transforms himself or herself by looking back upon the past. I think the musical is good for me because it allows me to take a backward glance at my life," said he.

The musical "Nine" hits the stage on Jan. 22 for a seven-week run at the LG Arts Center in Yeoksam-dong, southern Seoul.

Actress Suicide Most Shocking News This Year

By Kang Shin-who
Staff Reporter

The suicide of a female star was the most shocking news this year for Korean netizens. According to Naver, the nation's largest portal and search engine, Sunday, the suicide of actress Jeong Da-bin drew the most concern of Internet users in the shortest time.

Jeong, who starred in popular dramas and films, was under heavy pressure to raise her status and ended her life at her boyfriend's home last February.

Her death along with female singer Yuni, who also killed herself in January, sent shock waves throughout Korea and sparked a concern over copycat suicides.

Korea has the highest suicide rate among the OCED member countries and the nation has seen more deaths by suicide than those by car accidents.

Korean blockbuster movie "D-War" was the second hot topic for 2007. The film, directed by comedian Shim Hyung-rae, drew the largest number of viewers in the domestic movie history with 2.9 million over five days last August.

It was also the country抯 most expensive film, which cost $33 million and the film made inroads into Hollywood. However, some critics attributed the movie抯 success to its appeal to patriotism and ignited disputes over the movie抯 quality.

Coming in third was teenage star, Nam Bo-ra who is from a 13-member family. Nam's family was selected as distinguished residents of Seoul in 2005 and the 18-year-old girl appeared in a drama last year. Related to this, Korea is suffering from a low birth rate and the country has this year introduced several plans to increase it.

Actor Jung Il-woo also attracted attention from many netizens ― ranking his name fourth. His popularity has been in sync with MBC sitcom "Highkick," which recorded remarkable viewer ratings this year.

A ghost story came next. Annually TV shows present scary stories around summer and this year a ghost story that takes place in "Jayu-ro" scared the most people.

This year also has seen many stars

[2007 Drama Highlights] Best Kiss scenes

The drama market of 2007 had been flooded with a large number of high-quality dramas, range from large-scaled dramas of billion dollars worth production cost to much smaller-scaled, but of rich content dramas. Among these great ranges of dramas, the TV viewers had been laughing with character's happiness, crying over their heart-broken love story and were raged with unrealistic settings. Kiss scenes and crying scenes are necessary for the actors to express the complicated internal state of their character as realistic as possible. Following is a list of best kiss scenes chosen by general TV viewers.

Unexpected kiss scene ("Prince Hours")
While singer Se7en's transformation into an actor attracted attention, his love story with Heo I-jae was entertaining. The couple seemed to unable to overcome the difference in their social rank as a Crown prince and a court lady. However, Se7en's tough kiss at the end was enough to make the viewers excited.

To kiss or not to kiss ("Thank you")
Jang Hyeok was touched with compassion toward Kong Hyo-jin who had to suppress the pain of being a single parent. Even though there was no kiss, the way Jang Hyeok wiped Kong Hyo-jin's tears was much tingly than a passionate kiss.

Love is wafted on the rain ("Que Sera, Sera")
Eric Moon's love confession was followed by Jeong Yu-mi's kiss, in which the couple re-confirmed their love towards each other. The impressive kiss scene made the fans wildly excited.

Wretched tearful kiss scene ("Merry Mary")
The love story between the two poor youths satisfied the Merry Mary manias. The sincerity of the scene was enhanced when Lee Ha-na's tearful love confession was followed by Ji Hyeon-woo's tough kiss.

Refreshing Cucumber flavoured kiss ("War of Money")
Kiss while eating cucumber. Despite its awkwardness, the viewers commented the way Park Shin-yang and Park Jin-hee confirms their love for each other was as refreshing as a fresh cucumber.

A low-rated but heart-fluttering kiss ("Capital Scandal")
This couple fall in love while having quarrels. A kiss followed by Kang Ji-hwan's love confession to scrupulous Han Ji-min. When compared to bold kiss scenes of current melodramas, the scene is low-rated but was enough to flutter the viewer's heart.

Gong Yoo's coming out ("Coffee Prince")
2007's most precious couple. Gong Yoo couldn't resist his attraction toward Yoon Eun-hye, a woman in man's disguise, and end up declaring his coming out, "It doesn't matter whether you are a man or an alien. I don't care anymore. Let's go together, as far as we can go!", made the fans, who wished for their love, to shiver with happiness.
