Britain’s worst ever paedophile faces 22 life sentences

ASHFORD - One of Britain’s worst ever paedophiles who attacked hundreds of children in south-east Asia and used the ‘dark web’ to crowdfund some of the abuse is facing 22 life sentences.

Richard Huckle, 30, targeted an impoverished Christian community in Malaysia where he posed as a student, photographer, English teacher and philanthropist to groom his victims.

He took pictures and videos of himself raping and abusing young girls and boys and even a baby wearing a nappy.

Huckle bragged of the attacks in online blogs and penned a 60-page perverts’ handbook titled ‘Pedophiles & Poverty: Child Lover Guide’.

He forced some victims to pose with sick slogans advertising his foul images which he sold for Bitcoins on notorious paedophile website True Love Zone (TLZ) on the dark web – the encrypted version of the internet.

As part of an international network, Huckle awarded himself ‘PedoPoints’ for carrying out the attacks and used a paedophile crowdfunding website, called PedoFunding, to finance the abuse.

He began the nine-year campaign in 2006, aged just 19, and it is believed he assaulted up to 200 children before his arrest in December 2014 when he was caught with more than 20,000 indecent images.

The case can be reported for the first time after Judge Peter Rook QC lifted reporting restrictions today at the start of a three day sentencing hearing.

Huckle faces up to 22 life sentences at the Old Bailey after admitting to 71 charges, including rape, sexual assault, and sexual activity with a child.

He appeared in the dock today (Weds) wearing a black shirt, with his long hair tied back into a ponytail and sporting a goatee beard.

It took more than an hour for the charges to be put to Huckle at an earlier hearing, in what is believed to be the worst case of its kind.

The charges relate to the horrific sexual abuse of 23 girls and boys aged between six months and 12 years.

Some 22 of the victims are from Malaysia while one is Cambodian.

Huckle first visited Malaysia on a gap year teaching placement in 2005.

He then took indecent images of a three-year-old child while staying with a Cambodian family the following year.

He returned to Malaysia in 2006, where he abused and took photographs of two sisters, aged four and six.

In 2007 he came back to stay with their family where he took up a teaching post in their village and continued to abuse the girls until his arrest.

On his trips back to England he worshipped in Christian churches in London and the Station Road Baptist Church in Ashford, Kent which he used as a stepping stone to further the abuse abroad.

Huckle moved to Malaysia permanently in 2010 and enrolled at the Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University to study IT and later work as a freelance photographer.

He gained the trust of a poor Christian community in Kuala Lumpur through his English tuition where he was able to use his perceived status as a rich westerner to groom victims and their families with impunity.

Five of the children he abused were living in a children’s home.

Huckle posted hundreds of non-explicit photographs of children online on Facebook, Twitter and travel blogs alongside snaps taken at celebrations with his own middle class family, from Ashton, Kent.

On an amateur photography website, he wrote in his profile: ‘I’m a keen traveller, I spent eight years in Malaysia to expand my knowledge and on my photographic and travelling range.’

But on the dark web, Huckle was documenting every step of his child abuse, and hoped to make paedophilia a paying profession.

He posted hundreds of images on one of the world’s biggest child porn websites, TLZ, that had more than 9,000 members before it was shut down.

He turned to online paedophiles to crowdfund the abuse, allowing those who paid him in Bitcoins access to videos of him raping his victims.

Huckle went into intimate detail, providing commentary for the vile pictures and videos that he shared.

Huckle wrote: ‘I’d hit the jackpot, a three-year-old girl as loyal to me as my dog and no one seemed to care,’ he gloated in one post.

‘The three-year-old I could have as much sex with that it’s just boring. Well at least she’s now ready for business with [paedophile crowd]funding.’

He added: ‘The future has arrived. New video now up for sale. Please bear in mind this is not me having sex with a three-year-old, this is a three-year-old having sex with me.’

In another post, he said of a four-year-old victim: ‘I was going to lure him into the bedroom and have sex with him, but I think he noticed the trap and fled.

‘I’ll get him next time…’

Huckle also told of his methods, writing: ‘Impoverished kids are definitely much, much easier to seduce than middle class Western kids. I still plan on publishing a guide on the subject sometime.’

He added: ‘Would love to make a small income off selling child porn.’

Huckle wrote a child sex abuse manual explaining how to get away with exploiting children in Asia, called ‘Pedophiles & Poverty: Child Lover Guide’.

In 2014, he repeatedly abused a baby girl, aged just six months, and recorded it in his PedoPoints chart online.

Huckle awarded himself points based on catagories, including his victims’ age, sex and location and what he had done to them.

After undressing a two-year-old, seeing her naked, photographing and touching her intimately, then performing a sex act on her, Huckle gave himself six points.

Between November 2013 and November 2014, he amassed a score of 1,305.

Huckle groomed four children from the same family and repeatedly sexually abused one girl between the ages of five and 12.

In his blog, he bragged to his followers: ‘It’s quite amazing to have stuck with the same child lover for so many years, and I hope, from the images you have seen, enjoyed watching her grow.

‘It’s not often in child porn you can compare the bodies of a 5yo and a 12yo that are the same girl.

‘I’m sure I’ll have plenty more sex with [her] in the future.’

Huckle then turned his attention to her seven year-old sister after complaining the first victim had become ‘distant as a sexual partner’.

Boasting of his ability to avoid detection, he wrote: ‘It will likely take something very serious to get me to stop or slow down. If I’m not suffering the consequences, what’s there for me to learn from?’

His campaign of abuse was finally brought to an end when Australian police tipped off the authorities in the UK.

Huckle was arrested at Gatwick Airport on 19 December 2014 when he returned to the county for Christmas.

Police found 20,253 indecent images of children on his laptop and hard drives, many of them showing Huckle abusing children.

Using legislation that allows British citizens to be charged with crimes committed abroad, the National Crime Agency (NCA) charged him with 91 counts.

Huckle originally denied each of the charges and was due to face three separate trials as it was thought the material would be too much for one jury to cope with.

Jurors would have had to view the footage frame by frame while the public gallery remained closed to shield others from the horrific acts.

Lawyers discussed whether counselling would be needed by all those who had viewed the dozens of hours of harrowing material.

But Huckle gradually entered guilty pleas to 71 counts during five separate hearings between February and April this year after police recruited an anatomical expert to identify him in his own homemade videos and pictures.

Prosecutor Brian O’Neill, QC, asked for the remaining 20 counts to lie on file.

A total of 22 of the counts Huckle has admitted carry life sentences.

‘Richard Huckle, you have pleaded guilty to 71 counts,’ the judge told him at a hearing on 11 April this year.

‘As you know these amount to sexual offending of the utmost gravity and as a result I am considering life sentences in your case and I am also consider if life sentences are appropriate the minimum sentence you must serve.

‘In any event you must expect a very long sentence in this case given that it comes in the category of exceptional gravity.

‘As everyone in this court will know there is no distinction between victims here and victims overseas.

‘The offences are regarded as of the utmost gravity in both cases.’

Huckle, of (188) Godinton Road, in Ashford, Kent, pleaded guilty to 31 counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13; 12 counts taking indecent photos of children; six counts of assault by penetration; thirteen counts of rape of a child under 13; three counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity; three counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in penetrative sexual activity; arranging or facilitating the commission of child sex offences by writing a child sex abuse manual; making 20,253 indecent images; and advertising child pornography.

NCA Head of Operations Tony Cook said: ‘There is no doubt that the quantity and quality of the offending of this particular individual would have increased if he had not been arrested.

‘He was only 30 years old. We can only imagine the sort of offending he would have gone on to commit had he not been arrested.’

Branding Huckle a ‘depraved individual’, he described the case as an ‘unprecedented and exceptional amount of offending’.

‘He had got away with this offending for nine years but finally we can see him held accountable for his actions.

‘This case will hopefully send out a message to any transnational offenders who travel overseas to abuse children in this way that they will still face justice in this country despite the lengths they go to travel to countries like Malaysia to commit these offences,’ Mr Cook added.
