Malacca CM calls for probe into dog shooting incident

MALACCA: Municipal council workers allegedly trespassed into a house compound to kill a licensed pet puppy, hitting a raw nerve with its owner and also Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.
Idris asked why it was necessary for the seven enforcement officers to enter the compound of the kampung house in Lubok Cina, Alor Gajah, to shoot the seven-month-old dog.
“This is sheer cruelty, dogs and cats do not deserve to die in such a manner and we should remember that there will be retribution for all our misdeeds,” he said.
He called for a full report on the incident, especially on what had warranted the shooting of the animal within the perimeter of its owner’s house.
“We should care for another life and do not have the right to take a life, whether human or animal.
“There is no reason to shoot the dog and if there were complaints, the owner should have been informed first,” he said yesterday.
The 58-year-old owner of the dog, who works in Kuala Lumpur, lodged a report at the Alor Gajah police station on Sunday. She told police that she wanted justice for her pet.
A neighbour said the dog had been there for some time and the shooting really angered the owner.
He said that he saw some men, believed to be council workers, entering the village on July 29 before the dog was killed, adding that the incident was witnessed by the pet owner’s husband.

7 bulan kalau anjing kampung dah tak comel dah. Aiol cuma hadap anjing masa masih baby kecik2 comel2 gemok2 dompot2 gitu. Dah jadi toddler, teenager apetah lagi adult aiol dah tak hadap.

Lee: Veterinary depts must handle strays, not council workers           
KUALA LUMPUR: State Veterinary Services Departments should handle strays or animal cases and not municipal council workers, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Speaking on the case where municipal council workers killed a licensed seven-month-old dog in Malacca, the SPCA Selangor patron said local authorities were unfit to handle animals and their involvement in such matters resulted in too many cases of animal cruelty.
He also called for police action against the municipal council workers who allegedly trespassed into a house in Lubok Cina, Alor Gajah and shot dead the dog on July 29.
“This was totally uncalled for and they must be made to face the consequences.





“Cases of such nature are very rampant where local authorities inflict cruelty on animals. They should let the state Veterinary Services Departments handle it,” said Lee when contacted.
While he acknowledged there might have been cases where pets or strays caused disturbances in neighbourhoods, he viewed shooting incidents like the one last week as unbecoming of local authorities.
The owner of the dog in the Malacca case lodged a police report, after which Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron called for action to be taken against the seven enforcement officers who entered the compound of the house.
“There is no reason to shoot the dog and if there were any complaints, the owner should have been informed first,” he said on Monday.
