WIEF 2016-Indonesia, Malaysia stock exchanges to jointly develop Islamic capital market
JAKARTA – Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) and Bursa Malaysia today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop their Islamic capital markets, with the first product to be launched within six months, IDX President Director Tito Sulistio said at a media event during the 12th World Islamic Economic Forum.
The MoU specifies a partnership between the two stock exchanges in the areas of Shariah-compliant product development, joint studies, events and promotions, as well as the improvement of human resources.
“Through this partnership, we hope IDX and Bursa Malaysia will continue to develop instruments and Islamic capital market products and services and together undertake the role as a reference point at the global level,” said Sulistio.
“Malaysia has the largest Shariah financial market in the world while Indonesia has the largest Muslim population. By working together, I am confident that we can become a reference for Shariah products in the world,” Sulistio told reporters.
Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Tajuddin Atan said, “This agreement serves to formalize the earnest intent of both exchanges to collaborate in enriching offerings in our capital markets and broaden the use and availability of Islamic liquidity and products.”
Malaysia’s Islamic capital market more than tripled in size over the last decade, reflecting a compounded annual growth rate of 11.7 percent to reach 1.69 trillion Malaysian ringgit ($420 billion) by the end of 2015, according to data from Securities Commission Malaysia. Malaysia is the leader in the global sukuk market commanding 54.3 percent market share at the end of last year.
“Leveraging on our leadership in the Islamic capital market, I am optimistic that the collaboration could fuel the growth of the Islamic capital market for both Malaysia and Indonesia, be it via product development or market promotion,” Atan added.
