KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 — To accommodate the growing ridership for RapidKL’s Kelana Jaya LRT Line, operator Prasarana Malaysia Bhd introduced today what it calls the “new generation” four-coach trains.
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd chief executive Datuk Ir Zohari Sulaiman said Prasarana spent RM577.5 million to purchase 14 of said trains which will be introduced gradually, beginning with two trains this month.
“Come June 2017, we will have 49 four-coach trains to serve more commuters. We currently have 35 four-coach trains and with the new 14 which we have bought, makes it 49.
“Our two-coach trains meanwhile will be gradually reduced. As for the two-coach ones, we have about 34 trains, but we have plans in the future to connect them and turn them into four-coach trains as well.
“When the 49 trains are fully operational, we will be able to reduce the frequency of waiting time from 3.5 minutes to three minutes,” Zohari told a press conference here.
He projected the number of LRT users for the Kelana Jaya line to increase from 260,000 to 300,000 come June 2017.
“If the passengers increase to 300,000 and I don’t do anything with regards to the coaches, it will be bad as the load factor now is 150 per cent. If the trains are not improved, in months to come, it may go up to 200 per cent and people may not be able to get in even.
 Prasarana Malaysia Bhd introduced today the ‘new generation’ four-coach trains.
“As it is now, during peak hours, commuters are forced to miss three to four trains, so with these new trains, more people can ride,” Zohari said, adding that he is also aiming to reduce passenger load factor to 80 per cent, which he said is the ideal volume for comfort.
He said that feeder bus services will also be increased gradually for better connectivity.
Zohari said that the “new generation” trains boast revamped internal design with an increased capacity of 30 per cent, with modern aesthetics features.
The new four-coach trains were designed and built by Bombardier Transport, and also come with four closed-circuit television, or CCTV, cameras.
“The new generation train also reduces the friction between the train and the tracks and uses LED lights inside it which is energy saving and environmental friendly,” Zohari added. |
