Court to give ruling on Yingluck in 35 days

The Supreme Court will rule whether former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra is guilty of neglecting her duty in handling the rice-pledging programme on Aug 25, it announced on Friday.

The former prime minister will give her closing statement verbally on Aug 1. Both sides may submit written closing statements until Aug 15.

The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions turned down Ms Yingluck’s request for a Constitutional Court ruling on whether the court’s procedures were in violation of the 2017 constitution.

“The law on the procedures of the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions provides it may seek additional facts and evidence as appropriate. The 2017 charter allows the court to do so 'for the benefit of justice'. We decide the clause in the court’s procedures law are not in breach of the constitution,” the court statement said.

The court said it had allowed both sides to bring additional witnesses and evidence. The prosecutor submitted 21 requests to do so and a total of 15 witnesses were heard in 10 hearings. The defendant submitted 51 requests for additional witnesses and a total of 30 witnesses were heard in 16 hearings.

“We gave full opportunities to both sides to bring witnesses for the benefit of justice, the principle of the inquisitorial system.

“The defendant’s petition and its reasons did not meet the criteria of Section 212 of the 2017 constitution, which requires us to give opinions to the Constitutional Court for a ruling. We therefore dismissed the defendant’s petition,” it said.

Thailand: ‘Red shirt’ protest leader jailed for defaming former PM

THAILAND’S Supreme Court jailed a firebrand opposition leader for a year on Thursday for defaming a former prime minister, overturning two previous court rulings, in 2012 and 2014, that dismissed the charge against him.

Jatuporn Prompan is a key leader of the “red shirt” supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, who also served as prime minister. Their governments were both ousted in military coups, in 2006 and 2014 respectively.

Jatuporn led street protests in 2010 when the supporters of the populist former telecommunications tycoon Thaksin occupied a Bangkok shopping district for nearly two months, calling for the then prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, to resign.

Abhisit juga dari suku kaum Hakka.

Orang Thai kata memang keluarga dia Hokkien....sebab surname mereka kalau tak silap ingatan "Ouan",asal dari belah2 Fujian....

Mungkin campuran sbb banyak juga akhbar yg kata dia Hakka. Ada juga akhbar siam yg kata ancestry dia dari Khae iaitu Hakka ada yg kata dari Hokkien. Antara keluarga vejjajiva juga berbalah openly sama ada mereka Hakka atau Hokkien.

Thailand: Yingluck questions junta move to freeze bank accounts

FORMER Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday questioned a move by Thailand‘s military government to freeze her assets in relation to a US$1 billion fine it imposed over her government’s rice buying scheme.

The justice ministry on Monday began freezing several of her bank accounts.

She had filed a court petition to revoke the action to freeze her bank accounts saying the move was unlawful.

“The government has chosen to go ahead with it because they think they have the power to do whatever they want, without even waiting on the court’s decision on my injunction request,” Yingluck wrote on her official Facebook page, adding that she would continue the fight to prove her innocence.

Yingluck is currently fighting a criminal charge for alleged negligence over the rice scheme. The Supreme Court is due to give its verdict on Aug. 25.

“This action creates a condition that could influence the Supreme Court decision on the rice case,” Yingluck wrote, referring to the criminal case.
