If you see the name Jack Ma, what comes to mind?
His e-commerce giant Alibaba for starters but maybe netizens will also come to remember the tycoon for his choice of lunch menu.
While other senior executives and CEOs of top public listed companies indulge in mind blowing expensive lunches and dinners that run into five and six digits, guess what the CEO of Alibaba eats?
Instant noodles, and according to his staff who posted a photo of the boss sitting down to a meal, for the last 18 years, Jack Ma has been eating lunches like this.
The photo of the man who according to Bloomberg is worth US$37.4 billion having a simple lunch soon when viral after it was posted earlier this week.
Netizens were suitably impressed, pointing out that he could easily buy a few instant noodles manufacturers with his monthly pay and still have some change, lowyat.net reports.
Others jokingly observed that his cutlery set might have cost much more than his humble
meal.
This latest snapshot of the billionaire comes as no surprise as the founder of Alibaba has been known to have a humble management philosophy.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, he confessed that he doesn't use his time by going on shopping sprees.Pic: USA TodayPic: USA Today
"I don't have time to spend money," he said.
"People say, 'Jack, you can spend money better than government, better than the other guys.' So you have all the assets. How can you spend better?" USA Today reports.
Even as he complains about not being able to find the time to spend money, he certainly knows what to do for his company which is raking in record profits right after the third anniversary of Alibaba's IPO on 20 September.
"We know where we're going," said Ma of Alibaba's growth. "We want to be the fifth largest economy, enable more small business, young people, and enable globalization."
Alibaba’s revenue in the 12 months ending in March 2017 surged by 56% to USD 23 billion making Jack as the richest person in Asia and 18th richest person in the world, Forbes reports.
As summed by another reader who spotted the instant noodle lunch posting, "obviously, the richest person is one who doesn’t need to look rich". |
