ALOR SETAR: The headmistress of Maktab Mahmud Pendang is claiming trial to seven counts of abuse of power for directing her school’s structural upgrading to her brother’s firm Perniagaan MZ Nadi Cahaya Enterprise and another firm, Perniagaan Alir Kuasa Enterprise. The seven projects were carried out between Jan 13, 2015 and July 18, 2016, at a total cost of RM23,763.
The accused, Rafida Ramli, 46, from Alor Setar, was seen accompanied by her husband, Ustaz Ahmad Yahya, who is the state PAS information chief. She was arrested by the Kedah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at about 10.00am on Sept 5 at the state MACC headquarters when she came to assist in an investigation. She was later released on the same day. She was charged under Section 23 (1) of the MACC Act 2009. The offence is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act and carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. When the charges were read to her in Malay by a court interpreter before Sessions 2 judge Azman Abu Hassan, she nodded. State MACC Prosecuting Officer Syahrul Khuzaini Amiruddin prosecuted. He asked for a bail of RM6,000 for each of the seven charges with one surety. The accused's counsel, Ahmad Taufiq, asked for a lower amount of RM7,000 for all charges. Sessions 2 judge Azman granted bail of RM10,000 for all the charges with one surety and fixed Nov 1 for case mention.
