LAST WEEK , the people of this country received good news when Malaysia was reported to be supplying 12.8 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to meet the immunization needs of 6.4 million Malaysians.
The vaccine is understood to go through the first delivery of one million doses which will be made in the first quarter of next year.
The vaccine supply will be obtained from the pharmaceutical company, Pfizer through an initial purchase agreement signed by the government on November 24 and will be provided free of charge to Malaysians. While everyone is so excited about the Covid-19 vaccine, predictions from a Chinese expert are shocking.
"According to epidemiologist and Chinese government medical adviser Zhong Nanshan, the number of Covid-19 transmission cases in Malaysia is expected to be more serious next year.
"It is expected that on January 25, 2021, the number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia will reach up to 187,997 cases," Zhong said as reported in Sin Chew Daily.
Zhong, a world-renowned expert for his success in fighting the Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2003 and his excellence in facing several serious epidemics such as H1N1, H5N6, H7N9 and MERS. "We hope the government takes Zhong's statement seriously even in the form of predictions. Many criticisms and suggestions have been made for the authorities to address the problem of contagion among foreign workers.
"All the limited resources need to be focused on this high-risk cluster," wrote Sin Chew Daily.
For example, according to the Chinese newspaper, the Lotus Cluster that happened at the residence of Top Glove factory workers in Meru, Klang, Selangor should be a lesson to all parties. "Similarly, the construction project site has been identified as one of the areas that can easily spread the Covid-19 epidemic.
"The government has conducted many inspections on workers in the area but has not yet seen a system that produces the expected effectiveness," the newspaper said.
To avoid more serious contagion cases, Malaysia should take the same approach as China, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam which have successfully shut down the epidemic chain effectively.
Efforts to shut down the chain and receive vaccine injections are among the most effective ways to fight the spread of Covid-19.
"Finally, the vaccine remains a savior for all of us. We do not need to think about the safety of this vaccine because apart from the vaccine, the whole world may not have a more effective way to kill Covid-19, ”explained the newspaper.
