Oldest Intact ShipwreckThe oldest intact shipwreck has been discovered at the bottom of the Black Sea. The 23 metres vessel, thought to be ancient Greek, was discovered with its mast, rudders and rowing benches all present and correct just over a mile below the surface. Archaeologists say the vessel is more than 2400 years old, making it the world’s oldest intact shipwreck on record.Atlit YamAtlit Yam is an ancient submerged Neolithic village off the coast of Atlit, Israel. It has been carbon-dated as to be between 8900 and 8300 years old. Among the features of the 10-acre site is a stone circle. The site was discovered in 1984 by marine archaeologist Ehud Galili, and since then underwater excavations have unearthed houses, graves and wells. Scientists believe that Atlit-Yam was abandoned suddenly as a result of a tsunami hitting the region, probably caused by a volcanic eruption in the Mediterranean area.Underwater LocamotivesArchaeologists have discovered a train graveyard off the coast of New Jersey, where two rare locomotives from the 1850s lay preserved under 90 feet of water. Nobody knows how they got there or why they were sunk. There is no historical record of them ever being built and no record of them being lost. Explorers believe that the engines were lost in a storm five milesoff the coast of Long Branch, New Jersey, as they were being transported from Boston to the Mid-Atlantic.
