Aeon Big store in Subang Jaya to operate as usual

KUALA LUMPUR: Aeon Big (M) Sdn Bhd’s store in Subang Jaya will continue to operate as usual after it obtained a stay of execution of judgement against Mega Continental Sdn Bhd’s legal action.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, it said the Alor Setar High Court had stayed the execution of the judgement in default dated June 9,2020.

“The hearing to set aside the judgement in default for the sum of RM142mil made against the company earlier has been fixed to Aug 6,2020, ” it said.

To recap, Aeon Big obtained the High Court declaration from the Penang High Court on Nov 8,2019 to declare the agreement signed between Aeon Big and Mega Continental in Aeon Big’s favour.

Aeon Big said there are many important issues that the company should be looking at such as preserving economic sustainability, protecting public health and providing continuous employment to the people.

“Malaysia is facing an unprecedented global health pandemic and domestic economic crisis. It is important to focus on building the businesses and help to revive the economy, ” it said.

Aeon Big also confirmed that it will be opening its 22nd store in Malaysia, Aeon Big Jaya One in Petaling Jaya on July 23 with a net lettable area of 41,527 square feet. It added the store targets to provide about 150 jobs.

Despite experiencing a very challenging year due to the Covid-19; it said the management has turned around the company to become profitable for the first half 2020 as compared to previous years since taking over the stores from Carrefour in 2012.

“With the continuous support from our staff, vendors and suppliers, Aeon Big believes that this strong performance will continue throughout 2020, ” it said.

KUALA LUMPUR (July 17): The company suing AEON BiG (M) Sdn Bhd for money owed, claims the retailer did not have the right to remove the seal placed at its store in Subang Jaya, despite being granted an interim stay order by the court.

The store, located at AEON BiG’s headquarters, was partially sealed on Tuesday by the court bailiff after the creditor, Mega Continental Sdn Bhd, obtained a judgment in default against the retailer over failure to settle a sum of about RM142 million.

The judgment dated June 9 is in relation to AEON BiG’s alleged failure to perform an obligation under a lease agreement with Mega Continental in Alor Setar, Kedah.

On Wednesday, AEON BiG said it had obtained a stay of execution of the judgment from the High Court in Alor Setar, adding it can therefore continue to operate its Subang Jaya store.

The hearing to set aside the judgment in default has been fixed for Aug 6.

Yesterday, Mega Continental sought the court’s clarification on the interpretation of the interim stay and if that meant the seal could be removed.

The company said in a statement: “The Alor Setar High Court had only granted an interim stay to maintain the status quo of the matter, as AEON BiG had filed the application for a stay of execution of the judgment in default, (which) has yet to be heard and decided.”

Accusing AEON BiG of making “an inaccurate unilateral interpretation” of the stay order, Mega Continental said: “Any subsequent acts by AEON BiG in dealing with the seized goods, may therefore be contempt in the face of court.”
