Bedeviled sequel
By KEVIN WILLIAMSON -- Calgary Sun
God help them.
Warner Bros., that is, the studio releasing Exorcist: The Beginning today, and Morgan Creek, who produced this prequel to the horror classic.
So it's a really awful movie, huh? :hmm:
Well, probably.
Probably, because the studio didn't screen the film for critics -- a sure seal of disapproval and the best reason to believe that, like the previous two instalments in this franchise, it's a mess of Biblical proportions.
(The August release date -- a burial ground for exploitation flicks such as the forthcoming Anacondas -- is a bit of a tip off, too.)
Along with Jaws, The Exorcist is perhaps the most botched movie franchise of the modern age.
Three decades ago, the original -- about a possessed 12-year-old girl -- jolted the bejeezus out of moviegoers with its pea-green vomit and chilling meditations on religion and faith.
Since then, audiences have suffered Exorcist II: The Heretic -- an abomination with Richard Burton and Linda Blair lost in a grand goofy howler complete with '70s disco strobe lights -- and The Exorcist III, which saw George C. Scott channel the spirits of all the hams who'd gone before him.
Given this dubious history -- and the fact sequels and prequels rarely ever work as well as the original -- it was a questionable decision to greenlight an Exorcist prequel, but the studio was understandably bolstered by the potent box office the re-released director's cut met with four years ago.
They plotted a trip back in time, with John Frankenheimer (the original Manchurian Candidate) directing Liam Neeson as Father Merrin, the younger version of the weathered priest played by Max von Sydow. The prequel's concept was borrowed from a line of exposition in the original, in which it is explained that Father Merrin was nearly killed during an exorcism in Africa decades earlier.
The film would depict this encounter with evil.
Morgan Creek, the film's financiers, even hoped it would rejuvenate the franchise. But two years later, the studio has ended up with not one -- but two -- over-budget films of the same story with the same actor, but directed by two vastly different filmmakers. Neeson dropped out of the project shortly after Frankenheimer's death.
He was replaced by Stellan Skarsgard a new director was hired -- Paul Schrader (Auto Focus), the gifted auteur with a penchant for psychological terror and a disposition towards Catholicism.
This was the guy who wrote Taxi Driver.
Would Father Merrin become Travis Bickle with a collar?
We may know soon -- but not today. Schrader was fired from the project --producers said his film wasn't frightening enough, Schrader says the studio told him they didn't want schlocky shocks -- and replaced by Deep Blue Sea schlockmeister Renny Harlin.
But while Harlin was originally assigned to merely shoot some new scenes and recut the movie, he ended up jettisoning Schrader's script and replacing many of the cast members.
Morgan Creek -- which had already shelled out $30 million US for Schrader's movie -- ended up forking over another $50 million for Harlin's more commercially-attuned vision.
Moreover, the company was facing a potential legal mire. Would Schrader retain directorial credit (as Director's Guild rules state) or would it be "A Renny Harlin Film?"
(Schrader's film is said to be dark and cerebral. Harlin's film is not.)
Then, just months ago, Morgan Creek announced a remarkable move.
Harlin's movie would be released theatrically, but both versions of Exorcist: The Beginning would be released on DVD -- appeasing all parties involved and letting audiences decide which version would ultimately stand the test of time.
Somehow, though, for Morgan Creek, which is on the hook for more than $80 million, the prospect of tanking not once but twice has to be far scarier than anything in either film |
