KAPIT: The Kapit Chinese Community Leaders Association has called upon the Kapit Disaster Management Committee (KDMC) to set up road blocks at all the entry points here as a preventive measure to curb the spread of Covid-19 into this district.
In this respect, the association’s chairman Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo lists out Jalan Kapit-Song-Kanowit, Jalan Melekun-Mujong-Putai, Jalan Baleh (logging road) and Kapit Express Boat Terminal as the entry points to this district.
“Curbing the spread of Covid-19 is everybody’s concern.
“We wanted to keep Kapit under ‘Green Zone’ status, but unfortunately, the district recorded one positive case involving an Indonesian working at a road construction site at Sungai Merama – leading to Baleh.
“We’re very worried because even with one positive Covid-19 case, it could still expose threat to the whole longhouse community in Kapit.
“Thus, we believe that one effective measure is to not allow outsiders to come to Kapit, especially those from Sibu, Kanowit, Bintangor, Sarikei and even Bintulu – even for one-day visit.
“The spike in cases is a wake-up call for all of us to cooperate with one another to prevent the Covid-19 spread,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.
On the proposed roadblocks, Tan said they should be set up along Jalan Kapit-Song-Kanowit, at Mujong Bridge in Baleh, and also at the express boat terminal here.
“Record the details of those being checked at the roadblocks.
“This is necessary because many of the confirmed cases showed no symptom at all – they only found out that they’re positive after two or three swab-tests,” he said, suggesting that these roadblocks would be manned by members of the police and armed forces, People’s Volunteers Corps, Civil Defence Force and also the Health Deparment.
“The attitude of the people in Kapit has changed drastically – from being somewhat ‘carefree’ before this, to being more cautious after hearing about the Pasai Siong Cluster in Sibu, which recorded 37 positive Covid-19 cases in just one day,” added Tan.
Many of the townsfolk here frequently travel to Sibu to shop, or because they own properties in Sibu Jaya township.
