PETALING JAYA: More than 1,000 beds in private hospitals across the country will be utilised to help treat Covid-19 patients, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.
In a statement, Noor Hisham said some 1,138 beds, including 70 critical care beds, in 97 private hospitals have been identified by the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia (APHM) so far.
“The government has obtained the commitment of several private hospitals to receive referrals and treat Covid-19 patients, depending on their available capacity and expertise.
“The health ministry is studying the proposed partnership mechanism in further detail with APHM, the finance ministry and Bank Negara Malaysia,” he said.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin previously said the emergency would allow the King to enact several ordinances to curb the spread of Covid-19.
This would cover the use of private hospital assets, the temporary takeover of land, buildings or properties belonging to private hospitals, and the use, by request, of private hospital resources to treat Covid-19 patients.
In announcing the Permai aid package earlier today, Muhyiddin said RM100 million had been allocated for private hospitals to treat Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients, in order to lighten the patient load on the public healthcare system.
I think the centralized deployment of medical resources by the government is necessary and a necessary guarantee. If you look at the United States in the past year, you will know that no matter how advanced medical technology is, if there is no coordinated and orderly allocation of resources, we will only be greeted with disaster.
