The middle man

Hernando "Stout" Cortez is said to have climbed a tree on the Isthmus of Panama and seen both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans from his vantage point. Are there actually any locations on the isthmus (or elsewhere) where this is possible?
John Humbach , NATO HQ

answers...

One can indeed see both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans on a clear day from the Republic of Panama.

My grandfather, the Reverend S. Moss Loveridge, lived in Panama between 1900 and 1919 and he records in his autobiography, Panama Padre, how he climbed Balboa Hill, which is now known as Cerro Grande and is situated close to the Panama Canal and five kilometres from the town of Gorgona. The summit of the hill lies at 300 metres above sea level and from here he was able to see both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Photographs of the excellent views from this vantage point can be found in A Trip--Panama Canal published by Avery and Garrison of Panama City in 1911.

John Keats, who was the author of the ode On First Looking into Chapman's Homer, was wrong when he stated that Cortez stood silent upon a peak in Darin looking at the Pacific Ocean. In fact, it was Vasco Nez de Balboa (1475-1517) who first did this and after whom Balboa Hill (now Cerro Grande) was named.

In 1511 Balboa joined a Spanish expedition to Darin and he eventually become its leader. He founded a colony there before marching across the Isthmus of Panama and climbing a mountain from where he sighted the Pacific Ocean. He was the first European to do this, and subsequently took possession for Spain.

The Isthmus of Panama is, at its narrowest point, 61 kilometres wide. From the middle of the isthmus, the horizon would have to be at least 30
