West Ham United: The conspiracy theories fly like pretty bubbles

There is an element of jealousy in much of the reporting on the transfers of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano from Conrinthians to West Ham United. Supporters of the 'elite' clubs cannot believe that players of this quality can have signed for mid-table West Ham. Obviously the fear for many of these fans is that West Ham will suddenly become a top four club - with Arsenal currently the most vulnerable of the four.

Alan Pardew has said that the first that he knew about the deals was when his Chairman, Terry Brown, told him that the players were available to West Ham on Monday 28 August - when most of the media first found out that the players were being touted around, and then simply guessed at the obvious big name clubs. It seems that West Ham was the first choice all along.

The Guardian (01.09.06) report that the deal involves little outlay by West Ham, but that both players are available for ?35m and the majority of any transfer fee would subsequently return to Media Sports Investments (MSI) as a 'sell-on' fee. So the biggest downside that anyone can find is that two world class players will play for West Ham unless they prove to be so good that clubs are forced to pay more money for either of the players than Rooney, Shevchenko or Ronaldinho were recently worth. And into the bargain West Ham will pick up a few million.

Wow, what a downside for West Ham - brilliant players for now and millions in compensation later if someone covers the vast transfer fees.

Conspiracy Theory 1: Chelsea are behind this

The easiest accusation that can be levelled is that the pair are not ready for Chelsea - but Chelsea cannot afford them to go to Liverpool, Manchester United or Arsenal. Given that there were reported talks between the players' representatives and both United and Arsenal only adds fuel to the fire. Were Chelsea worried about rivals recruiting and wanted to 'pay back' Arsenal over the Cole squabbling?

This morning Chelsea fans can console themselves with the theory that the players have been 'parked' at West Ham and available for transfer at ?35m each. The kind of price that only Chelsea can afford in world football, means that they can improve until they can improve Chelsea.

Conspiracy Theory 2: MSI are about to buy West Ham

Kia Joorabchian who runs MSI last year tabled a ?90m bid to buy West Ham, which was rejected. But it is interesting that a club that was forced to sell its best players and was mired in debt three or four years ago, has been able to recruit quite freely since MSI's bid. Late last night West Ham also tried to sign Brazilian international full-back, Cicinho - but were rebuffed by Real Madrid.

According to The Independent (01.09.06) 'West Ham are now set for a takeover bid from Iranian investor Kia Joorabchian, the president of MSI', so there could be big money backing West Ham and as Chelsea have proved big money and a good manager gets you the title. West Ham for the title - is it really more unlikely than Blackburn Rovers winning the league ten years ago?

Conspiracy Theory 3: MSI will dictate when they play

Many people have been quick to suggest that the pair won't play against Chelsea, or they won't play in the UEFA Cup - because this may (in some way) damage their marketability. The theory being that the pair are being lined up for the January sales already. This seems a bit silly because for any team to pay ?35m for either of them in January they will have had to shown world beating form against the top teams ie in Europe and against Chelsea, Manchester United etc.

This one is easily solved. West Ham play Palermo on 14 September (which might be a bit soon), and on the 28th, as well as Chelsea on 18 November. If the pair play in these games then MSI are clearly taking a back seat.

Conspiracy Theory 4: Boris Berezovsky is playing games

Berezovsky is another Russian Billionaire who was reputedly a business partner to many of the potential players here at different time - Roman Abramovich and Kia Joorabchian specifically. But some theories suggest that Berezovsky controls MSI and has fallen out with Abramovich - fallen out to such an extent that he is prepared to lavish tens of millions on getting back at the Chelsea owner.

Perhaps this is similar, but on a different scale, to when Sir Alex Ferguson fell out with 'The Coolmore Mafia' over Rock of Gibraltar - hell hath no fury than a rich man after falling out over money?

As conspiracies go it is fairly weak, how many rich men throw away cash to hurt other rich men? Most rich men appear to be more concerned with becoming increasingly rich than they are with squandering money on petty rivalries.

Choose your conspiracy theories well because they will be overtaken by events. None of the four clubs who expect to challenge for the title (who can use the expression 'big four' with any certainty now) can feel comfortable with a club newly arrived in the elite. For much of the 1990s Arsenal and Manchester United were on top, then Liverpool and Chelsea found the money to challenge them. Now Spurs (despite a couple of hiccups) are threatening to move in. If West Ham through contacts or ownership can get the kind of players that would stroll into every club side in the world then they really are a player. This season is too early for a title tilt, but as the theories fade will we be left with a new force in English football? That really will be good for football fans tired of the domination by the same old teams.
