Man City trio on PFA player of year shortlist
April 17, 2012 9:21am
LONDON - Manchester City dominated the shortlist for English soccer's players' player of the year announced on Monday (Tuesday, PHL time) with David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Joe Hart among the six nominees for the award.
Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Scott Parker completed the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) nominations.
Van Persie, the Premier League's top scorer with 27 goals, is the bookmakers' favorite for the award which will be announced on Sunday (Monday, PHL time).
There was no place on the shortlist for last year's winner Gareth Bale.
The Tottenham winger will compete with teammate Kyle Walker, Aguero, Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge and United's Danny Welbeck for the young player of the year award. - Reuters |

Chelsea striker Sturridge on Man City hit list
Submitted by Andrew Slevison on Tue, 04/17/2012 - 15:00
Recent reports suggest that Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is toying with the idea of bringing Daniel Sturridge back to the club.
The 22-year old Chelsea attacker started his career at Eastlands before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2009 with Mirror Football reporting that City are keen on having him back.
Sturridge has slightly fallen out of favour since Roberto Di Matteo took the reins from Andre Villas-Boas in West London and it is believed that City could come in with a summer bid of around £20million.
Mancini said:" “It was strange because Sturridge was developed in Manchester and someone let him go. "
“If Sturridge was here today, he’d be in the first team. I’ve watched him many times and I know him well.” |

Balotelli plans Manchester City stay
09:00 PM 17 April, 2012
Mario Balotelli is happy to stay at Manchester City Football Club.
The Italian international has been a controversial figure since joining the Blues in the summer of 2011, when they paid around £24million to take him from Internazionale.
Balotelli may not play for City again this season having angered coach Roberto Mancini with his latest sending off, and this has led to speculation of a return to Serie A.
Inter are said to be keen on taking the striker back whilst rivals Milan are also admirers, but the 21-year-old insists he has no plans to leave the Etihad Stadium.
"My future? Why do you always talk of Inter and Milan for me? I'm at City and I have no intention of changing shirt," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. |

Manchester City 13th on Forbes money list
The Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City
Manchester City are 13th on the latest Forbes list of most valuable football clubs, worth £276m.
The Blues are hoping to rise up the list with the prospect of sustained Champions League success and new fans from a global expansion strategy.
Manchester United continue to top the list, but Real Madrid are gaining ground.
United are also ranked as the most valuable team in any sport, worth 2.24billion US dollars (£1.4bn), 385million USD more than baseball's New York Yankees and the NFL's Dallas Cowboys.
Arsenal are fourth on the list, worth 1.29billion USD (£800m), behind Real Madrid (USD1.6bn, £1bn), and Barcelona (£816m) but just ahead of Bayern Munich (£766m).
The Forbes list ranks Chelsea in seventh place, worth £474m, and Liverpool eighth with a value of £386m.
United's huge global fanbase, estimated by Forbes to number 330million, has helped maintain the club's position at the top. However both Real Madrid and Barcelona have higher revenues than United, due in large part to the fact they have negotiated their own individual television rights deals for Spanish football.
The figures are also based on last year's financial results reflected United getting to the Champions League final.
This season Sir Alex Ferguson's side failed to make the knockout stage and their income from European football is expected to suffer a corresponding drop, especially in relation to Real Madrid and Barcelona who are both in the Champions League semi-finals.
Tottenham are 11th on the list, valued at £351m. |
