international break....
It’s international break time and at Chelsea that means a very sparse Cobham training ground. With the Blues featuring no fewer than 20 full internationals amongst their ranks the international break always means an empty canteen for the club. Fifteen of the Blues first team squad will be absent from the club’s training ground for the next week or so and Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping his stars return in the same condition they departed in.
Blues trio Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry head off hoping to secure World Cup qualification with England. The Three Lions face Slovenia in a friendly at Wembley on Saturday followed by a huge game at home to Croatia four days later.
Dynamic midfielder Michael Essien will be racking up the air miles. Essien travels first to his homeland of Ghana to play against Sudan in a qualifier and then makes the long journey to Japan in a friendly match next Wednesday, to win his 47th cap for his country.
Samba stars Alex and Juliano Bellitti are two stars not travelling as neither has been included in Brazil’s 22 man squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Chile and instead will continue training in Cobham.
Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda will be hoping they can help France improve their position in Group Five. Las Bleus currently trail Serbia by five points at the top of the group ahead of their home tie against Romania and away fixture with Serbia. Lining up against the Blues French duo will be their Chelsea team-mate Branislav Ivanovic, who will be representing Serbia.
Portugal stars Deco, Ricardo Carvalho and Jose Bosingwa travel to Denmark and then Hungary. The game is a must-win for the Blues trio and their fellow countrymen as they currently sit third in Group One four points behind Hungary and seven adrift of Denmark.
Michael Ballack is on captain’s duty with Germany and will return home to lead his country out against South Africa on Saturday in a friendly and Azerbaijan in a qualifier as the Germans look to cement their place at the top of Group Four.
Group Four also plays hosts to Russia who occupy second place. Russia who are coached by former Blues boss Guus Hiddink usually feature Chelsea new boy Yuri Zhirkov but the Blues midfielder has still yet to recover from a knee injury.
Petr Cech heads off with the Czech Republic as they face Slovakia and San Marino and look to improve their position in Group Three. The Czechs currently sit second from bottom, seven points off the top.
Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou head back to Africa as the Ivory Coast play host to Burkina Faso as the Elephants look to maintain their 100% qualifying record so far.
Blues midfielder John Mikel Obi also heads home as his native Nigeria welcome Tunisia in a world cup qualifier.
With so many of his stars on international duty it will definitely be a quiet week for Ancelotti and the Italian will just be praying his players return in the same shape and form they left him in.

NEW A.COLE DEAL....
Following confirmation today (Wednesday) that Ashley Cole has signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea, Carlo Ancelotti has predicted good times ahead for the player.
'I am very happy that Ashley has committed himself to Chelsea,' the manager said.
'He is one of the best left-backs in the world but I believe his best is yet to come. I am very pleased that will happen in a Chelsea shirt.'
Cole becomes the fifth existing squad member to pen a new deal this summer, following on from Florent Malouda, John Mikel Obi, Didier Drogba and John Terry. |

Fifa have banned Chelsea from registering any new players in the next two transfer windows.
The world's governing body have handed down the punishment after French clubs Lens made an official complaint over Chelsea's signing of their young player Gael Kakuta in 2007.
Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) has now found in Lens' favour and ruled that the Blues are 'jointly and severally liable'.
As such, the Stamford Bridge club have been banned from signing players over the next two transfer windows, which means they will not be able to bring in any new faces until 2011.
18-year-old Kakuta, a regular in Chelsea's reserve side, has also been banned from playing for the next four months and fined £680,000.
Chelsea are also liable over Kakuta's fine, and they also will have to pay Lens £113,000 in compensation.
A Fifa spokesperson stated: "This decision confirms our aim to ensure contractual stability. It is an important ruling for football in general."
Statement
The full statement from Fifa reads: "On the occasion of its last meeting held on 27 August 2009, the Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) was called to pass a decision in a contractual dispute opposing the French club Lens to the French player Gael Kakuta and the English club Chelsea.
"The French club had lodged a claim with Fifa seeking compensation for breach of contract from the player and requesting also sporting sanctions to be imposed on the player and the English club for breach of contract and inducement to breach of contract respectively.
"The DRC found that the player had indeed breached a contract signed with the French club. Equally, the DRC deemed it to be established that the English club induced the player to such a breach.
"As a result the player was condemned to pay compensation in the amount of €780,000, for which the club, Chelsea, are jointly and severally liable, and sporting sanctions were imposed on both the player and Chelsea in accordance with art. 17 par. 3 and 4 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.
"A restriction of four months on his eligibility to play in official matches has been imposed on Kakuta. Chelsea are banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two next entire and consecutive registration periods following the notification of the present decision. Furthermore, the club, Chelsea, have to pay Lens training compensation in the amount of €130,000."
Appeal
Chelsea, who have yet to comment on the sanction from Fifa, do have the right to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The Blues are not the first club to have been punished in such a way.
Roma were also given a ban for two transfer windows following defender Philippe Mexes' move from Auxerre in 2004.
Roma appealed to the CAS and had the ban cut to one transfer window. If the same situation was repeated it would mean Chelsea being unable to sign players until next summer.
