WHY ROMAN LOST HIS FAITH IN KENYON

THE HARSH truth is that he has never really been accepted by the supporters. Many of the Chelsea faithful always regarded Peter Kenyon as a Manchester United man, thinly disguised. Never as one of them.

That was why, despite all the lucrative, high-profile sponsorship deals over the years with big companies like adidas, Samsung, Thomas Cook and 188 Bet, Kenyon was always regarded with suspicion.

And every failure to land a star player – like Robinho last year; every bold, brash statement that Chelsea were going to break even by 2010; were going to be biggest club in the world by 2014, hammered a nail further into Kenyon’s coffin when they failed to come true.

In the end, he even lost the faith of the man who so boldly went out to bring him to Chelsea from their biggest rivals in 2003 – Roman Abramovich. In the end there were too many gaffes, too many misjudgments in public, even if the behind-the-scenes dealing was often astute.

So the man who set out to make Chelsea a global brand name, and partially succeeded, has gone. His departure last night after six years at the club was abrupt, but not totally unexpected. Speculation had been rife since early last year, when he had seemed to be sidelined by Abramovich in favour of Frank Arnesen, who was promoted to sporting director this summer.

Kenyon walks away from his £1.9 million-a-year job with a compensation package that could be worth as much as £3m. And he stays as a non-executive director with a brief to fight the case that postponed his departure – FIFA’s signing ban imposed on the club a fortnight ago after their controversial capture of French teenager Gael Kakuta from Lens.

Kenyon will lead the club’s appeal later this year, even though his full-time role ends on October 31.

Chelsea have always strenuously denied Kenyon had been pushed aside. But the damage was done last year.

Luiz Felipe Scolari was Kenyon’s choice to succeed Avram Grant as manager in the summer of 2008. But Kenyon was on holiday in Barbados when Abramovich sacked Scolari seven dismal months later.

Then this summer, when Carlo Ancelotti was recruited as the Russian’s sixth manager, Kenyon was reportedly not involved – Arnesen and Abramovich himself doing the negotiating.

Kenyon had been left with nowhere to go. The Daily Express understands he had considered leaving as early as last summer, but had put off his decision until the end of the transfer window. But Arnesen’s position is also still far from secure.

Kenyon arrived at Chelsea as the man who had revolutionised United, turned them into a global phenomenon with massive deals with Nike and Vodafone, and a commercial operation without parallel in modern football. But as soon as he arrived at Chelsea, with the much-trumpeted aim of turning them into world leaders by 2014, hiccups began to occur.

First there was the embarrassing attempt to recruit England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson in March 2004 – the Swede was pictured meeting Kenyon in London. Then in January 2005 came the Ashley Cole affair, which earned the club a £200,000 fine. Three months later Kenyon was pictured in a hotel meeting United defender Rio Ferdinand.

At the start of the 2005-06 season, Kenyon brashly declared that the Premier League winners would come from a “small group of one”. Chelsea did in fact win it that year – but it is a remark he has never really been able to live down.

Kenyon has spent the last year – when Chelsea’s debt to Abramovich grew to £701m, reduced to £339.8m with some £369m converted to shares – trying to distance himself from the claim of self-sufficiency by 2010.

He did have undoubted success, though, in boosting the Chelsea brand. A renewed adidas deal was secured, an extension of the £50m Samsung agreement and deals with Thomas Cook and 188 Bet.

But gradually he has been edged away from the transfer deals after losing out to Manchester City for Robinho last summer, much to Abramovich’s fury.

Arnesen, the owner, and agent Pini Zahavi have been doing the bargaining, and in the end Kenyon has become the latest victim of the eternal political strife at English football’s most volatile club. ‘The damage was done last year, he had nowhere to go’

Chelsea name Ron Gourlay as man to replace Peter Kenyon

Chelsea have named Ron Gourlay as their new chief executive.

The 46-year-old replaces Peter Kenyon, who announced on Wednesday he would be stepping down from the position at the end of next month.

Gourlay, who was previously the chief operating officer at the London club, told Chelsea's official website: "It is a huge honour to be offered the chance to lead Chelsea."

Gourlay continued: "We have a fantastic team both on and off the field and those teams can move us on to even greater success in the future.

"To be responsible for that is a fantastic challenge and I will be giving it my total commitment, drive and energy.

"All successful clubs strike the balance between the footballing and commercial sides and my role is to ensure this happens as it is a critical part of our strategy moving forward."

Gourlay has been at Chelsea for five years in a variety of roles. He has more than 25 years of experience in football and past senior jobs include working at Manchester United and Umbro.

Cole returns as Blues scrape past QPR

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole returned from his long-term knee injury to help defeat QPR 1-0 and send the Premier League leaders into the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

The 27-year-old, named by manager Carlo Ancelotti as skipper for the evening, was playing in his first match since January and set up Salomon Kalou's winner at Stamford Bridge.
