Once Officers and Ratings have completed foundation and branch training, they are considered to have joined the Trained Strength of the RNR. Prior to this, they will have served as Midshipmen (age 17-20) or Sub-Lieutenants (age 20+). Thereafter promotion is by selection to Lieutenant Commander* (Major/Squadron leader equivalent), Commander (Lieutenant-Colonel/Wing Commander ) and Captain (Colonel/Group Captain). The highest appointment is the Commodore RNR (Brigadier/Air Commodore).

The Ratings' structure is equally competitive and rewarding. Once part of the trained strength, RNR Junior Ratings compete for promotion to Leading Hand (Corporal equivalent), Petty Officer (Sergeant) and Chief Petty Officer (Colour/Staff or Flight Sergeant). Some may achieve the top rank of Warrant Officer introduced in 2003. I have different opinion when it comes to perks and qualifications of graduates in ATM.

I feel its better for any Bachelour degree graduate to begin at the rank of 1st Leftenant rather being given a commission as a Captain. There are a few concerns to my argument:

  i) Leftenant is the basic commander in the Army. If the graduates are serious about a life in the military, it is imperative that they begin there. I am sure that TDM is still relying on RMC to produce 2nd Leftenants for filed commands, but this does not mean that graduates should be exempted from being platoon leaders.

  ii) The problem in the commisssion is not the rank, its the salary scale for graduate officers in the military. By upgrading them the ir commission rank, we have deprived them of valuable expereince needed in the field.

With due respect, I dont see the need for Captains who cant do a task a Leftenant should perform.

agree with you R6.....but i guess an appropriate rank of 1st Lieutenant would also be more attractive to reservist grads, esp those of the older age since they may already hold ranking positions in civvie life...to lump them as 2nd or ag sub-lieutenant when they want to serve would be a disincentive, esp if they report to junior officers fresh out of college...as it is, even the palapes corp has not been a successful officer breeding ground exercise, at least to the level of ROTC or Military Academies elsewhere..

That is one reason why degree grads are now commissioned as Capts in the service, as otherwise it would not be so attractive servive, esp those who are bright scholars in this NCW age...

same as the reserves, if you want to attract good candidates, the same rule should apply...don't let the reserves become dumping grounds for less than stellar characters who can't fulfill their civilian lifes....let it be a matter of pride like the brits reservists and american national guards...

R6 just wanted to know yr opinion  as an ex-comm reservists, if you re-enter the service now with a 2nd lieut rank vis-a-vis yr position now....what would you feel...

Dlm Angkatan tentera AS, semua graduan kecuali graduan bidang perubatan, pergigian, veterinary dan agama ditauliahkan sebagai Lt Muda tidak kira mereka graduan Akademi ataupun graduan IPT yg dilatih di OCS atau graduan ROTC. Ini bertujuan memberi pendedahan kpd mereka tugas pegawai muda di peringkat medan/platun (bagi US Army & Marine Corps).

iyep jazim, itu memang cara tradisi to join officer corps...saya rasa beza kita kerana salary scale saja kenapa kita kena naikkan entry rank kepada kapten, bukan field command....odd bukan...

I would reconsider about joining the reserves again. Its hard to restart all over again.

In this case, the officer would just have to accept reality although I am sure the reserves is not as rigidly treated in the chain of command as the main army.

that's what i thought....its not really the rank..its the experience we bring that should be considered...don't expect to be in the front lines though many reservists did win honours in service...

A lot of thoughts have been given. Nothing much we can do about the present system in order to give them appropriate salary.

As far as possible, newly commision officers will be given as much field experiences as possible. Junior field appointments will be flexi-post to fit in their ranks.

The organization will as far as possible train them to commensurate with their rank. Whether they are up to the mark... its relative.

I think besides the rank, we have to realise that the social strata in Msia is becoming more and more narrow, thus, the need to extend perks and special commissions to graduates should be halted. Educational should be encouraged, but not at the expense of leadership quality and training.

As I said, its not the rank, its the salary scale. A better pay for a Leftenant would entice people to join the military better as well.

Perhaps we must measure that even today a private could understand the situation better and has some idea about defence and technology.

Agree with you to many extend.

A review in the military salary scheme will involve other similar uniform organization and a general review. This is quite difficult as it is sponsored by different agency although it is censored by one. Further, it will appear to be taking a step backward.

If leadership and experience is the problem, they could be easily address appropriately and effectively by the organization.

1.Maksud Pegawai Tauliah tu aper? :hmm:
2.Kalo ade student medic/dentistry/pharmacy yg berminat nk jadik pegawai tauliah tu awal2 masuk kene kawad kaki ke?Ade kene ikut latihan military ker???
3.Ape ape je yg berlaku sejurus selepas mereka masuk ATM?
4.Lepas hsemanship baru wajib join ATM ke selama 10tahun plak??
5.Ape kelebihan berkhidmat di ATM?...elaun ke etc..

MASIH ada lagi sebenarnya tanggapan sesetengah pihak bahawa kerjaya dalam bidang ketenteraan pasti berhadapan dengan situasi perang yang mencemaskan. Pendek kata, nyawa sentiasa di hujung tanduk!

Ketepikan segera pandangan negatif itu. Kerjaya ketenteraan pada hari ini sebenarnya tidak memerlukan seseorang 憁enggadai nyawa

ATM ada berbagai scheme.Kalau tak de diploma or ijazah, no problem.Ada Latihan Pegawai Kadet dalam semua perkhidmatan Darat, Laut dan Udara.  Kalau ada, diploma boleh ditauliahkan (macam terima perlantikan dari Agong) sebagai Lt. Kalau ada Ijazah polisi sekarang Kapt tapi mungkin tergantung dengan keperluan dalam bidang yang khusus kerana ATM dah ada akademi sendiri.Kalau tak de ijazah tetapi akademiknya bagis boleh masuk ATMA full scholarship and pay plus you get a degree from UTM dan 10 tahun service obligation.Kalau medical and dentistry, tauliah sebagai Kapt.Kerja askar bukan kawad ajer.Itu semua istiadat aje.Ade banyak lagi kerja yang exciting that we do.Land Sea and Air.Pegawai muda sekarang lebih educated, and motivated and from all races.
