Baddrol bin Bakhtiar Set For Wigan Athletic Trial

Wigan Athletic are being linked with offering a trial to Baddrol bin Bakhtiar, a Malaysia international who plays for Kedah FA.

The winger is highly rated in his homeland and he has 11 international caps scoring 3 goals, the Latics are certainly casting their nets far and wide in an effort to unearth some gems.

Safee mula tunjuk belang

Oleh ZAZALI JAMIAN
sukan@utusan.com.my

Malaysians set for City trial

Sali has been descibed as ' the David Beckham of Malaysia '

Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay to trial Malaysian pair

Malaysia duo Safiq Rahim and Safee Sali have been offered trials with Championship outfit Cardiff City.

Rahim is the national team captain and is currently on trial with the Bluebirds for the next fortnight, while Sali, who QPR boss Neil Warnock recently described as 'the David Beckham of Malaysia ', is set to fly out to Wales two weeks later.

Sali, 27, has one of the highest profiles across South East Asia, and is regarded as the best Malaysian marksman of his generation with 16 goals in 31 internationals.

He is currently plying his trade for club side Pelita Jaya in the Indonesian Super League, but City chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee has convinced the player to try his hand at the Cardiff City stadium.

And Sali has revealed that he is thrilled at being asked to trial with the club and is ready to show manager Malky Mackay what he is capable of.

He said : " Every Malaysian football fan follows the English game and I'm no different. Even as a kid, I've always dream of one day plying my trade in the English league and now I have a chance to do that with his trial.

" The door has been opened for me. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am going to give it my all to prove my credentials. "

Cardiff City hand ' Malaysia's David Beckham ' his big chance

Football correspondent Steve Tucker reports on Cardiff City’s interest in Safee Sali - ‘ Malaysia’s David Beckham ’

WALK anywhere in Kuala Lumpur and there’s a good chance you might see the face of Safee Sali beaming down.

The name might not mean anything in British football but in Asia they don’t come much bigger.

In fact, Queens Park Rangers boss Neil Warnock described Sali as “ the David Beckham of Malaysia ”.

Watch Safee Sali in action :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbTtmZz0U6o

Warnock should know as Rangers were linked with Sali before Cardiff City stole a march in the race to sign the free-scoring striker by taking him on a two-week trial.

Of course, Cardiff and Rangers have Malaysian owners – the big-spending Tan Sri Tony Fernandes having just taken over at Loftus Road – and it could be argued that signing Sali is a crude marketing ploy.

A PR stunt of Premier League proportions ?

Imagine the interest in Malaysia in their top player plying his trade in British football.

There would be a few replica shirts in it, that’s for sure – much to the delight of Bluebirds billionaire backer Vincent Tan and chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee.

But is there more to Sali than a marketing man’s dream? Well, his goal record would suggest so.

The 27-year-old is regarded as the best Malaysian marksman of his generation with 16 goals in 31 international outings to prove it.

With goals, come cash. Sali was the face of his previous sponsor Adidas across South East Asia and is currently tied up to Nike.

The sports giant have paid him the ultimate accolade of supplying him with his own named boot.

That has raised Sali’s profile on the international stage and there has also been reported interest from Bundesliga clubs in Germany.

But after flying into Cardiff on Monday, Sali – who currently plies his trade at Indonesian Super League side Pelita Jaya – was remaining modest about the prospects of playing in Britain.

Sali described his opportunity to impress manager Malky Mackay at Cardiff as “ the chance of a lifetime ” and is just hoping to make a good impression in the Welsh capital.

“It all started when Cardiff contacted my agent about the arrangement,” Sali told a Malaysian newspaper.

“ When my agent told me I was in a state of shock.

“ I didn’t believe it at first, thinking it was a practical joke.

“ Then my agent had to reassure me that it was for real; that Cardiff City was really interested in having me on board for a two-week stint.

“ It slowly sank in and naturally, I was elated over the whole matter.

“ When things were finalised I told my wife and she too was in disbelief, but she and my whole family were very happy about the whole news.

“ I’m still very happy and really excited but I do have several concerns, one being my old knee injury.

“ I’m praying that I will be fit and well throughout my time there.

“ Language too will be an obstacle. But I hope I will be able to adapt quickly and make the best of my opportunity.

“I know some people may treat this trip lightly, but to me, being called up for trials with the first team is already an honour.

“ Deep down inside I am bent on impressing them. Perhaps this would help market my capabilities in that region.

“ I know I’ve been linked to the Bundesliga, too. A good showing in Cardiff would surely help me secure something in Europe.

“ But I don’t want to be seen as being too far-fetched, so for now I’m just going to enjoy myself by playing good football.

“ I’m thankful, it is certainly a chance of a lifetime.”

One thing that cannot be disputed is that Sali certainly knows where the net is.

During his club career in Malaysia, he scored an incredible 110 times in 138 appearances for various clubs.

At his current Indonesian employers he has continued where he left off with seven goals in 13 appearances.

Mackay is certainly in the market for an extra striker to boost his attacking options.

The starting partnership so far this campaign has seen Robert Earnshaw paired up top with Kenny Miller.

Young Frenchman Rudy Gestede has made a number of substitute appearances in the league, but, along with Joe Mason, is currently seen as too inexperienced.

Burly frontman Jon Parkin does not appear to figure in Mackay’s plans and was close to moving to Coventry recently.

With the loan window now open Mackay has confirmed he is looking to add new faces.

But even with Premier League sides having named their 25-man squads, experienced options for the Bluebirds look limited.

“ It is a small pool you have to fish in of who the Premier League clubs would like to loan out, ” said Mackay.

“ Even among that there is criteria like wages that are astronomical or youngsters who are not ready to play in the Championship yet.

“ So there’s a small band and I would imagine about 15 clubs in this league are looking for them – and we’re one of them.

“ We certainly need a little bit of strength-in-depth if we are going to make it through a 46-game league season.

“ We need strengthening in every area. ”

At 5ft 8ins, Sali barely fits the bill of the strong forward presence that Cardiff are crying out for. But, with his trademark turn of pace and deadly finishing, he could yet add another dimension to Cardiff’s play.

One thing is for certain, if Sali can impress over the next fortnight then life at Cardiff City might never be quite the same again.

Tony says sorry on TV

The fans had waited almost 15 years for an apology from the former Premier League star, and this week, ex-West Ham and Selangor striker Tony Cottee finally laid to rest the controversy that had been brewing since he became the Malaysian League’s biggest ever signing in 1996.

In his recent interview on Astro SuperSport’s Bola@mamak, Cottee addressed many of the controversial remarks that followed him during his football career in Malaysia.

" The last thing I am is a prima-donna but I was just used to a higher standard. When you go to another country and when you question the other guys, that is perhaps why I was pictured the wrong way. Did I enjoy the football? No. Did I enjoy being in Malaysia ? Yes, ” he remembers. “ Different culture…. I had a great time. My twin boys were conceived here. So I will always have great affection for Malaysia ”, said Cottee.

Cottee stunned the sporting world when he went from the Premier League to Selangor in October 1996. Aged 31 at the time, he had scored 182 top-flight league goals over 14 seasons with the Hammers and Everton.

When he returned from Asia in the summer of 1997, Cottee was signed by Martin O’Neill at Leicester City, linking up with Emile Heskey.  He got his first taste of the European stage in the UEFA Cup and finally won a major English trophy when Leicester lifted the 2000 League Cup. Eighty-five league games for the Foxes yielded 27 goals, including the winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 1998.

Selangor Hammer

Posted on 3 March 2011 - 07:59pm

" TOO MANY MUSHROOMS and not enough magic " is how one wit described Tony Cottee’s 10 months in Malaysia in the mid-1990s.

If a touch unkind, it refers to the manner of his leaving as well as a less-than-stellar spell with Selangor, memories of which were stirred when he popped up on our screens as a World Cup pundit last year.

Cottee scored 14 goals in 23 games in Malaysia – not a bad return but perhaps not quite what was expected of a striker who bagged over 300 in a 20-year career in English football.

One of his strikes helped win the Malaysia Cup but even that can’t compete with his mushrooms jibe.

" The grass on some pitches, " he told a British newspaper, " was so long I saw mushrooms growing. " It was not the only bridge he burned.

There were other quips about having to clean his own boots and rooming with a teammate whose early morning wake-up calls disturbed his slumber.

Some players might have taken the " out of context " option when tackled on it but not Cottee.

" I really saw them, " he subsequently said of the fungi fields he was expected to play on. " It was no joke. "

If this didn’t go down too well with the groundsmen of the time, Cottee at least told it as he saw it and in doing so showed the makings of a no-nonsense pundit.

There is no ducking and diving or shooting the messenger for him – he stands by his comments a decade and a half later.

In an e-mail interview he told me : " I have happy memories of my time living in Malaysia but I didn’t enjoy the football. I did play in the Malaysia Cup final and my scoring record was good. I was just frustrated with the lack of professionalism I came across in my time out there.

" To be fair, English football had been going for 120 years and in Malaysia just 15, so I should have known what was coming but that didn’t mean I didn’t struggle to come to terms with it. It has given me some good material for my after dinner speech though… "

Asked how he got into punditry, he is typically forthright. " It was after my last season playing and a failed attempt at management (with then fourth division Barnet).

" I made a call to a friend at Sky and they gave me a chance on the Soccer Saturday show. I’ve always enjoyed working with the media, so it was a natural thing to do after that last season ! "

That last season (2000-01) saw him play in all four divisions, a precipitous descent by any standards but the rapidity is partly explained by his dabble in management.

He was also given a player-coaching role at Norwich after being released by Leicester City on a freebie in gratitude for three sensational years.

When he quit Malaysia, he was a forgotten man. He’d gone off the radar and admits: " I wasn’t wanted when I left so I thought I would return to one of my local clubs, Southend or Orient maybe, to play out my career. So, to join Leicester and work with Martin O’Neill was fantastic. I had three wonderful years there and winning the League Cup was the highlight of my career (the only trophy I won). "

His gratitude to O’Neill is not surprising. He is such a fan of the Ulsterman that he wishes he’d got the England job instead of Steve McClaren and the West Ham job when he was strongly linked with it in January.

" He’s that good, " insists Cottee. But while the Brian Clough disciple deserves immense credit for helping reverse a career heading nowhere fast, Cottee is far too modest to mention his own contribution.

Thirty-four goals in 100 games for the Foxes was proof he’d not lost his cunning in the penalty area. If that isn’t a bad return for a mid-30s striker, it was a reminder of his prolific heyday when Everton broke the British transfer record for him in 1988.

The fee of £2 million (RM10m) was paid back with interest – 99 goals in 244 games – including two against Liverpool in that epic 4-4 draw after which Kenny Dalglish first called it a day.

But it was at his beloved West Ham where Cottee made his name, scoring on his debut as a 17-year-old against Spurs and forging a lethal partnership with Frank McAvennie.

He had two spells with the Hammers, returning from Goodison before being sold to Selangor for £700,000 (RM3.5m).

He also won seven England caps. As evidence of his longevity, he played for more clubs after he left Malaysia than before he came.

He certainly liked the country and when he came out to do the World Cup on Astro, he brought his 70-year-old dad out with him to meet old friends and let him see for himself what Malaysia is like.

Now an occasional contributor from London where he’s a regular for Sky, he’s much valued for his knowledge and insightful analysis of the game.

It’s a role he enjoys along with after dinner speaking but the latter didn’t come naturally.

" It does now but I’ve been doing it for eight years. Trust me, at the start, I was rubbish. "

Telling it straight is Cottee’s modus operandi and he’s not afraid to own up to a gaffe.

" I pride myself on not making too many mistakes on TV but we all do it. Last season, I called a goal scored for Gillingham by a Leeds player… and it wasn’t an own goal!

" Also, about five years ago, I turned up at the Sky Studios in West London to be a pundit when I should have been at the City Ground in Nottingham to cover the match. I never made it to the game ! "

Fourteen years after leaving these shores, it’s fair to say Tony Cottee, raconteur, pundit and after-dinner speaker, has not let that grass grow under his feet.

Apa Yang Aku Lihat Dalam Buku Cerita Malaysia Tidak Ke Piala Dunia

Well, itulah yang sebenar-benarnya tujuan ber-blog.

Patriotisma tinggi, brader.

Aku jarang membeli novel.

(Itulah sebabnya aku membenci Selangor FA, sorry to say.)

Apa yang menarik perhatian aku mengenai buku ini ialah kegigihan Lucy mengumpulkan bahan-bahan temuramah dahulu mengenai bola sepak Malaysia. Aku sendiri baru tahu bila membaca buku Lucy ini, dimana Alan Harris pernah berkata ;

Wadefook ?

Buku Cerita Malaysia Tidak Ke Piala Dunia : Satu ulasan

Gaya penulisan Lucius seperti lazimnya kita tahu memang seperti Supermokh diatas padang.

New challenge

By DEVINDER SINGH
devinder@nst.com.my

BADDROL Bakhtiar could soon be joining Safee Sali at Pelita Jaya if the Indonesian Super League (ISL) club successfully conclude negotiations with Kedah FA.

Malaysia's Sea Games gold medal-winning captain expressed his desire to venture abroad and hopes the Kedah FA will grant him his wish to make the move to Pelita Jaya.

" As a professional player, I would like to broaden my experience in football and playing outside the country is one way of doing so.

"If the offer is right, I'd definitely want to take it up," said Baddrol, 23, after a meet-the-fans session at KL Festival City in Danau Kota, Setapak yesterday.

Baddrol, who underwent a two-week training stint with Chelsea in 2008, is a key figure for Kedah and his departure would be a big blow to the Super League side.

But with tomorrow's deadline for registration of players for the 2012 Malaysian football season fast approaching, Baddrol is hoping for a speedy resolution.

" For now, I am still a Kedah player and I have a contract until the end of 2012. The Indonesian club are  still in negotiations with the Kedah management.

" I will only go if Kedah allow me.  It all depends on Kedah reaching a deal with them. There is not much time left so I hope to get an answer in a day or two, " said Baddrol, who scored three goals in Malaysia's Sea Games campaign in Jakarta last month.

Safee, who joined Pelita from Selangor early this year, is one reason Baddrol is keen to make the move. Pelita are set to play in the unsanctioned ISL although that does not concern Baddrol.

" Safee has been telling me what it is like to play in the Indonesian league and offered me advice on how to make the transition.

" I know the Indonesian league is a bit messy but I'm not really worried about that. I just want to play, " added Baddrol.

Tawaran Pelita Jaya : Baddrol Bakhtiar tunggu keputusan KFA

06/12/2011 10:44pm

KUALA LUMPUR 6 Dis.
