Woman caught smuggling tropical fish at Melbourne airport

The 43-year-old woman, who arrived on a flight from Singapore, was allegedly carrying 51 live tropical fish hidden in a specially designed apron under her skirt. The exact species of the fish were not known, but they could carrydiseases potentially dangerous for Australian fish if they escaped intolocal rivers, the customs officials said.
If convicted of smuggling wildlife, the woman faces up to 10 yearsin prison and AUD80,000 fine, An Australian woman was sentenced Friday to ninemonths of community service work for smuggling protected fish from Asiain her dress.
Sharon Naismith, 45, was caught in June 2005 at the airport in thesouthern city of Melbourne after customs officers heard "flipping"noises coming from her clothes and conducted a search, AustralianCustoms said.
In a specially made apron under her dress, they found 15 plasticbags filled with water and fish: one rare Asian arowana that customssaid was worth tens of thousands of dollars, and 14 catfish.
