Malaysia has recorded one of the world's highest rates of school bullying, according to the 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
According to The Star, the study ranked Malaysia fourth out of 45 countries, with 56% of surveyed Form Two students reporting they had been bullied.
South Africa topped the list at 70%, followed by Morocco (60%) and Brazil (57%).
TIMSS 2023 surveyed over 8,000 students and headmasters from 180 Malaysian schools, alongside tens of thousands of students worldwide. While the study primarily measures maths and science performance in 4th- and 8th-grade students, it also gathers data on various education-related issues, including bullying
Analysing the TIMSS results for 21 middle-income countries, including Malaysia, the Center for Global Development (CGD) found an overall increase in reports of physical and emotional bullying among students in 2023"When comparing bullying data with TIMSS's 2019 cycle, we note that in 2023, more students reported experiencing physical and emotional bullying from peers. "On average, the percentage of 4th graders reporting bullying increased from 45% to 56%, and among 8th graders, from 60% to 64%," it said.
CGD found that 75% of boys and 68% of girls in Form Two in Malaysia reported experiencing emotional bullyingEmotional bullying involves behaviour such as teasing, name-calling, rumours, and social exclusion.
Physical bullying was less common but still widespread, affecting 49% of boys and 39% of girls.
Despite these findings, more than half of Malaysian headmasters surveyed (52%) said bullying was not an issue in their schools, while 43% considered it a minor problem.
Only 5% viewed it as a moderate or serious concern.
