Brown University reports active shooter in Providence campuspublished at 06:2906:29Breaking

Some developing news just reaching us out of Rhode Island, where there are reports of a shooting at the Brown University in Providence.

Posting an alert at 16:22 local time (21:22 GMT) Brown University said there is an "active shooter" near its engineering block.

The latest update says police do not have the suspect in custody and the university is urging people to continue to shelter.

At 16:22 local time (21:22 GMT) Brown University sent out an urgent alert, warning of an active shooter on campus and urging people to "lock doors, silence phones and stay stay hidden until further notice".

It also said people should run, evacuate safely if they could, hide or as a last resort they should "fight".

Then, less than an hour later, at 17:11, Brown University issued a fresh update telling people to continue to take shelter.

"Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s)," the statement says.

"Brown coordinating with multiple law enforcement agencies on site. Emergency medical on scene."

Moments ago, Brown University said there are reports of "shots fire near Governor Street".

Multiple victims transported to local hospitals, says universitypublished at 07:2007:20

Brown University has issued a statement confirming "multiple shooting victims".

"We are not able to share their condition," the statement reads but adds "they have been transported to local hospitals".

The university is now working to establish who was at the scene during the shooting.

It says multiple exams were taking place in the Barus & Holley Engineering building in the afternoon - the initial alert of an active shooter on campus had been issued for near the building.

Two people have been reported killed in the shooting incident at Brown University, according to the BBC's US partner CBS, who cited a law enforcement source.

Other US news outlets including the Associated Press and NBC have also reported the same information.
