Singapore is hosting Exercise Bersama Lima, a major Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) joint exercise involving air, maritime and land forces from Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The exercise, held from 17 Oct to 4 Nov 2011, will involve about 4000 personnel, 68 aircraft, 18 ships, two submarines and various support elements from the FPDA member nations.
This year's exercise will comprise a shore phase held at the Changi Command and Control Centre and a sea phase that will be carried out in the South China Sea. In addition, a two-day humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) workshop involving other government departments and non-governmental organisations will be conducted in conjunction with the exercise. Exercise Bersama Lima aims to enhance interoperability and mutual understanding among the personnel of the FPDA armed forces. It also serves to strengthen the FPDA's capabilities in dealing with regional security challenges.
Present at the opening ceremony this morning were Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General (LG) Neo Kian Hong and the Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Dato' Sri Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin. During his interaction with exercise participants, LG Neo noted that FPDA joint exercises strengthen professional ties and develop military cooperation among member nations. He said: "FPDA joint exercises enhance member countries' capacity in areas of mutual interests, such as maritime security and HADR. Exercise Bersama Lima, which involves both assets and personnel from member nations, provides the FPDA armed forces an opportunity for knowledge sharing and to interoperate at various levels."
The FPDA Defence Ministers will be visiting Exercise Bersama Lima when they meet in Singapore on 1 Nov 2011 in commemoration of the FPDA's 40th anniversary. Singapore will also be hosting the 8th FPDA Defence Ministers' Meeting on the same day.
Anyway, in Bersama Sheild 2011,you also did not see the F15SG and Suk 30 MKM.
Things to look foward to in the future are the participation of the RAAF Wedgetail AEW planes alongside Singapore's G550 Phalcons AEW planes, RN's Type 45s alongside Singapore's Formidables (both classes use Aster missile shields), submarines from TLDM, RSN, RN and RAN.
Forgot to add in last reply. RSAF's F16Ds/D plus are said to be similar to F16Is and F16 wild weasels. That is they are powerful jamming aircrafts in addition to being good multi role combat jets.
Would you believe a F5E can defeat even a typhoon with the right conditions and circumstances? air combat is multi dimensional and not simply platform versus platforms. hence, air forces around the world are building systems of systems.
