A 20-year-old student in China, who risked his life to save a suicidal man from being hit by a train, could lose both his legs. But the hero says he has no regrets and would do it all over again.
Li Boya—a second year student at the Railway Police College in Zhengzhou, Henan province—was working as an intern at Changli Railway Station in Qinhuangdao, Hebei province, when the incident happened last week.
A man had jumped onto the tracks in a suicide attempt, Li's rushed over to try to save him and was hit by the train, crushing his right foot and severing his left leg below the knee.
Li was rushed to the hospital where doctors worked frantically to save his legs, but they ultimately had to amputate his left leg. Still, doctors are hopeful that they can transplant his left foot, which was miraculously intact, to his right leg. If they succeed, he would only need one artificial limb.
"He's being monitored," said Dr Zhang Xu. "Post-op infections are a concern. It'll take a week before we can say if the transplant worked. It's going to take a long time for his bones and muscles to recover. We can spot the minor injuries when his condition improves and we can do more tests then."
Zhang added that when Li's condition stabilises and he's well enough to be moved, he would do better at a hospital in Beijing when they'll have all the facilities to treat him. Meanwhile, the hospital has assigned a psychotherapist, Liu Weng Ming, to help him and his family deal with the trauma.
"He's very strong and he's got a positive outlook," said Liu, after spending the last week with Li. Beijing News reported that when Li's mum asked him if he regretted his actions, Li told her he would try to save someone's life under any circumstances.
"It was an instinctual reaction to save him after seeing him jump in front of the train," Li told New Tang Dynasty TV. "I wasn't thinking about anything else."
Beijing Railway Police have given Li a 200,000 yuan (about RM100,000) reward for his bravery and promised him a job when he graduates. There's also been an outpouring of public admiration and sympathy for Li, but Li's dad posted a thank you note on Weibo to say that there's no need for cash donations.
As for the man who attempted the suicide, 41-year-old Liu Shichen, he sustained head injuries and has remained unconscious at the hospital since the incident. Railway police have contacted his family in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, but the reason for his final act of desperation remains unknown. |
