DAP rejects offer of 10 minutes’ airtime on RTM

March 25, 2013 GEORGE TOWN, March 25 — The DAP will not take up the offer of 10 minutes’ airtime on Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) to make its pitch to voters, party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today.
“They are treating us like beggars, this 10 minutes of airtime doesn’t equate to freedom of press,” Lim (picture) told a press conference.
The Penang chief minister was responding to an announcement by Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim last Friday that political parties will be given 10 minutes’ airtime each on RTM to present their pre-recorded manifestos in the lead up to national polls.
“This 10 minutes’ airtime is a joke, we don’t want to take up this offer as we don’t want to give Barisan Nasional (BN) the satisfaction and justification that they are practising freedom of speech,” Lim said.
He labelled the offer as a mockery of freedom of the press, democracy and an insult to the intelligence of the people.
“We don’t want 10 minutes, one hour or two hours, what we want is the right of reply,” he said.
He said the opposition wants the right of reply, not only during the general elections, but at all times in all of the mainstream media and TV stations, almost all of which are BN-controlled.
Rais had said the opportunity was provided in respect of the democratic system of the country.
Lim said fellow Pakatan Rakyat component party PAS may not take up this offer too.
“I have spoken to PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu and he agrees with DAP in not taking up this opportunity so PAS will not take up this offer too,” he said.
Lim will also be discussing the matter with PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
