Renault and Caterham team up to build Alpine sports car
Renault and Carterham to revive Alpine sports cars as part of a new joint venture.
By Chris Knapman
11:31AM GMT 05 Nov 2012
Renault and Caterham are joining forces to design and build new sports cars, reviving the famous Alpine badge.
In an announcement made this morning it was confirmed that the sports cars, which will be badged as Alpines and Caterhams, will be built at Renault's plant in Dieppe, Normandy, where Renault currently produces race cars for its Renaultsport division, as well as the Renaultsport Clio hot hatch. The cars will be "distinctive, differentiated, and carry the respective DNA of Alpine and Caterham Cars. "
The deal is understood to have stemmed from Renault supplying engines to the Caterham Formula One team and means that Renault will sell 50 per cent of its stake in Automobiles Alpine Renault to create an even partnership with Caterham (Renault currently owns 100 per cent of Alpine). From January the company will be officially called the Société des Automobiles Alpine Caterham, and headed up by Bernard Ollivier, who has worked for Renault since 1977 in planning, finance and management, eventually holding the position of " Vice President, Transformation of Renault " .
Renaultsport Technologies and Caterham Technology and Innovation (the Caterham Group's engineering and technology division) carried out a feasibility study on the joint development of a sports car, concluding that they could combine their skills to build models in large and small volumes. Each company aims to launch a car within the next three to four years.
Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of Renault, said: “ This innovative partnership with Caterham embodies a longstanding ambition : the creation of a sports car with the Alpine DNA. It carries both opportunities for the Dieppe plant and the development of its historic expertise. ”
Initial speculation was that the companies would build a car based on Renault's Alpine A110-50 concept, which it unveiled earlier in the year to mark 50 years of the Alpine Berlinette. It featured a space-frame chassis with carbon-fibre bodywork and a mid-mounted 3.5-litre V6. However, a report on Autocar.co.uk suggests that the first car to emerge from the partnership will be a two-seater with an alloy chassis, costing about £35,000.
Commenting on the venture, Ollivier said : " The road map for each car is clear and simple: respect the DNA of both Alpine and Caterham Cars. With the passion and expertise of the staff dedicated to this project, we are sure of meeting this aim ”.
Tony Fernandes, Chairman of the Caterham Group, said: “ I have not felt as excited about a new venture since I launched AirAsia in 2001 and I want to thank Carlos Ghosn and Carlos Tavares and everyone in our new Renault family for having the belief in Caterham Group to create this partnership.
" Many people doubted us 11 years ago when we launched our airline and I am sure that there will be doubters again this time, but we will not fail your trust. We know the markets we are going into and, particularly in my playground in Asia, there is a huge opportunity to replicate the AirAsia model and give consumers access to exciting, affordable products that marry our interests in F1 and technology and help make their dreams come true. ”

Caterham Aims To Sell Affordable Sports Car In Asia, Europe
Monday, 25 March 2013 10:47
KUALA LUMPUR : Caterham Group plans to sell its affordable sports car, CT02, in Asia and Europe by 2015.
Chief executive officer Riad Asmat said there are untapped areas in terms of the sports car industry.
"The project is ongoing and in terms of progress, it is doing very well," he told Business Times on the sidelines of the launch of Caterham's new bicycle, the Duo Cali, here last week.
In November last year, AirAsia supremo Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and his business partner, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, surprised the world by announcing a joint venture with French carmaker, Renault SA, via the Caterham Group.
The firms joined forces to design, develop and build affordable cars.
The sports cars will be built at Renault's Alpine plant in Dieppe, Normandy, France.
The car will be targeted at the growing affluent Southeast Asians, particularly in Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, Riad said the Duo Cali bicycle, which has a revolutionary new concept in bicycle design, is produced to complement the Formula 1 business that Caterham currently has.
The group targets to sell 99 bicycles by year-end in the Southeast Asia as well as Europe.
Each bicycle is priced at RM40,000.
The Duo Cali bicycle uses a symbiosis of F1 technology and design approach.

MOTORCYLING : A coup for Caterham
By Arnaz M. Khairul | [email protected]
MOTO2: Malaysian-owned outfit gain two slots for 2014 World Championship.
THERE was little surprise on the Misano track over the weekend, but off it came the biggest coup yet for the Caterham Group who have, instead of Petronas Raceline, gained two slots for the 2014 Moto2 World Championship.
With that came questions over the future of promising Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah, who had a slot in the Moto2 World Championship planned by sponsor Petronas, and his team principal has vowed to fight the young Malaysian's case.
On the sidelines of the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday, decisions by the International Racing Teams Association (IRTA) and MotoGP rights holders Dorna Sports S.L. on applications of teams for next season sent these shock waves that left different marks on the two Malaysian camps.
Caterham's two slots mean they will be the first full fledged Malaysian team in the FIM World Motorcycle Championship since the Petronas Sprinta TVK Team that last contested the 250cc championship in 2003.
This was also seen as another coup for Caterham F1 head of operations (Asia) Mia Sharizman Ismail, who is also the team principal of the group's other second tier four-wheeled racing outfit, the Caterham Racing GP2 team.
He, however, refused to be drawn into speculation that Hafizh would be one of the riders Caterham are eyeing to fill one of their two slots next year.
" What I can say at this moment is we have the two slots.
" Other details, we will announce after the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, " said Mia Sharizman.
" Of course when we go into something like this, we always want it to be a platform for Malaysian riders, but we haven't even talked about the riders yet. "
It is also no secret that current Moto3 World Championship rider Mohd Zulfahmi Khairuddin is also a rider who has long been supported by Caterham chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes via his AirAsia business.
But Mia Sharizman denied that this was a move that was set up for Zulfahmi to make the move up into Moto2.
" We can't just go in and tell riders to come and ride Moto2 next year. It has to be carefully planned.
" We will first announce details on the team and the bikes.
" All will be in due course, " said Mia Sharizman.
Petronas Raceline Malaysia team principal Barry Leong vowed to fight 17-year old Hafizh's cause, stating that an appeal has been lodged.
Hafizh is currently third in the CEV Moto2 Championship in Spain, in what has always been planned as his final development year before he is moved up into the World Championship.
" By any means, we vow to get Hafizh into the Moto2 World Championship next year, so as for now we have begun the appeal process," said Barry, when contacted in Italy yesterday.
" We had adhered to all the procedures and submitted our application long ago, but the IRTA and Dorna told us the preference was given to existing teams who make up the current grid in Moto2. "
Barry, however, refused to comment on Caterham being given two slots as a new team in the championship instead of the Petronas-backed outfit.
